I read years ago in some anthropology journal that many tribal societies were considered 'established' or 'mature' when they got the amount of time-per-adult spent working down to three hours or less each day, with the rest of the waking hours spent socializing, recreating, or philosophizing.
As one who works 65-70 hours per week, with few waking hours able to be devoted to socializing, etc., it is hard to think our society has 'advanced'.
On the other hand, I'll bet if you add up all the U.S. citizens who are just vegetating, welfare-sucking, goofing-off, barely-working bureaucrats, etc., who are working close to zero hours per week, maybe our average IS under three work-hours per adult per day.

When you think about what the Indian said, that pretty much describes the typical American way of life up until 1940 or so, with the exception of the hunting/fishing all day. THAT was the Indian's work.
