whitneyville "kennedy" main hammer spring.

Post by gatorcole »

I have a Whitneyville 44cal "kennedy" lever action double set trigger and the main spring for the hammer broke. So I have tried Numrick parts and local gun smiths with no help. Can anyone know where I should search next. The weapon was made in 1870s I have been on the whitney museum site with no luck on getting info. Have pictures of the part and weapon if that will help.

Sorry I can't help with a spare main spring, have you tried Dixie Gun Works? here in the UK most Gunsmiths could make a replacement. A custom gun maker in the US should be able to help, might be pricey though.

Welcome to the fire, I hope you hang around, we like old leverguns.. :D

Have you been in contact with Track of the Wolf? Or similar muzzleloading specialists. They may have ideas about adapting parts from a muzzleloaders double set trigger for your lever action. I am surprised a gunsmith could not easy make the replacement spring and re temper it.

You could also try this guy who also works on rifles.

You may have to make one. Spring stock is available from Brownells.
Springs are not that difficult to make especially since you have the pattern . :D

A competent gunsmith should be able to make one. Unless he's just a parts changer.

I had to get a spring for a marlin 1881 from Wisner's inc.I do not see a listing for what you have or that they would make anything custom but it can not hurt to ask.You could e-mail them.

Just noticed your post and realize that my response is a little dated. Hope you have found a solution by now. In my experience these are seldom available unless you run across someone who happens to part out a Whitney Kennedy. The spring from either a large frame or small frame rifle or carbine will work. They can be made by a competant gunsmith, but the small roller on the end of the spring is difficult to duplicate. I have seen springs that simply have a rounded end shaped into them work (not quite as well as the originals, but sufficient to shoot the rifle). I noticed also that the end of your hammer is broken off. These are not available through any sources I know of, but occasionally come up on ebay. WK1

As Chuck says, an easy fix. You might also try taking the spring with you to a gunshow and hit up the "parts man". Many mainsprings are similar in design and strength and you may only have to do a small amount of filing to make it work.

Google "gun parts for sale" and tell the guy you can send him an exact drawing and maybe they can match up something close.

Good luck...........--------------Sixgun
