firestarter

Post by Mescalero »

My firestarter is a magnesium bar with a wood handle the flint sits in a milled channel in the mag. bar.
A piece of hacksaw to strike the spark.
The flint has become delaminated from the mag. bar.
Any ideas on what kind of adhesive to use that won't interact.

I used some white colored 100% pure silicone to glue mine back on. Put about 5 wraps of electrical tape on the end I hold it, for insurance, and just in case I needed some tape in a hurry.

Yeah they are, have 1 in a backpack. 1 on motorcycle, 1 in shed and 1 on my bicycle. Plus a 3/8" by5" ferro rod that will start barch bark or dried leaves and grass with 2-3 strikes.

If you have a Harbor Freight Tool Store nearby, they are 2 or 3 bucks there. Cheap enough to stash them all around. Cheaper than you can buy adhesive for as well.

Forgot to mention that in the thread we had going. I like those self lighters but they fizz out if they get too wet. I keep a butane windproof lighter with the torch. Just in case.

Isn't it just as easy to stash some conventional matches and lighters. I love Rube Goldberg as much as the other guy, but, really...... :P :P I have some strike anywhere matches that must be 30 years old, and holding up fine in a zip lock....

actually if you've gotten soaking wet and your skiff is drifting into the night and you're gonna be there for a while, and everything around you is soaking wet and you're out of radio range .....

you're really gonna love that propane bottle and you're really gonna hate those matches, unless you need one to torch off the propane .....

My kits have several levels. Matches, cigarette lighters, pitch pine tinder, wax/wood firestarters, magnesium firestarters, cotton soaked in petroleum jelly, all cased up in a ziplock then a plastic container. I need to add some road flare sections. I've tried the little butane torches for the smaller packs but they're unreliable.

Has anyone else but me tried/used Potassium Permanganate & Glycol/Glycerine (even Mountain Dew will work)?

The crystals are light, hydrophobic and the exothermic reaction will set about ANYTHING on fire. Mix a little Fe2O3+Al powder with it and you CAN burn anything... no matches required.

(FWIW, FerFal likes the stuff too)

101 Uses: Potassium permanganate

Maybe not 101 uses but it has several important ones and it has been a very popular item in many survival kits for a long time, typically a small vial with potassium permanganate crystals in it.

Before going any further: 1) Its can be dangerous in many ways when misused 2) It does stain with a red/purple tint that is hard or impossible to remove.

What’s it good for?

Water purification: 3 or 4 crystals per liter of water. You want to have a very light tint of pink. Stir and leave it for 30 minutes.

Fungal and wound cleaning: Another common use. As a matter of fact, its commonly used for fishtank cleaning and killing fungus in fish. Add a few more crystals until you have a darker tint of pink.

Hand sanitizing: This same solution can be used to wash hands.

Signaling: Dissolve some in water to get a bright pink/purple solution for coloring white or clear colored fabric. You can also spread it on snow to make a visible signal.

Fire starter: 1 part sugar , 2 parts potassium permanganate, grind into a thin powder and it will light with a spark from a ferrocerium rod (fire steel).

I ordered a pack on line but you can also buy it from some aquariums or veterinarians since its used for fish tanks.

5lbs costs about $20.

OI, that's one thing I saw one of the "survivor" shows did. Keep forgetting what its called, the water purifying really interests me. What type of stores carry it? Incidentally the mag block and striker rod took me 5 minutes and 2 tries to get birch bark flaming on a drizzly, foggy windy day on the beach of Lake Superior.

Just reread your post. Answered my own questions.

Pool Supply stores, (many) Hardware stores. It's all over the Internet (Amazon sells it). It's not considered HazMat.

Once you've mixed it with the glycerin, and it dries into crystals, it's pretty easy to set off with a bit of jostling, or hard rap.... Dang near primer grade stuff.

I've used potassium permanganate to stain T/C Hawken kit stock. I think old timey stockmaker Hal Hartley used to use it.
