RIP Stormin' Norman

He was my I-Corps commander when I was at Ft Lewis, Washington. A finer soldier you could not find anywhere.

He is one general of whom I heard no genuine negatives.

Very sad.

To me he was right up there with Ridgeway, McArthur, Patton, Bradley and Eisenhower! Among others.

Very sad indeed. I can think of many others that deserve to go before he did, but such was not meant to be.

RIP General.

He was always positive and upbeat about everything it seemed. Two things about him stick out in my mind and both happened during the first Gulf War: One was at a news conference where he was showing a video of a bridge being blown up just as an Iraqi Army truck crossed it. He said something to the effect "...that's the luckiest man in Iraq today. Wonder what he was thinking when he looked in his rear view mirror?"

The second was when he was being interviewed by a US reporter at field post in Iraq. He had a shotgun leaning up against the wall and the reporter (stupidly) asked "what's that for?" and he replied "it's a shotgun and it's for protection." Something similar to that anyway.

On a different note, IIRC, his father was the head of the New Jersey State Police and headed the investigation of the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby. The baby was stolen by Richard Bruno Hauptmann.

Day is Done - Gone the Sun...........
From the lakes, From the hills, From the sky ........
All is well, Safely rest, God is nigh.

Fading light - Dims the sight ..........
And a Star, Gems the Sky, Gleaming Bright .........
From afar, Drawing nigh, falls the Night.

Thanks and Praise - For our Days ............
Neath the Sun, Neath the stars, Neath the sky.............
As we go, This we know, God is nigh.

He was a great citizen as well. He had some favorite charities he helped support by sponsoring a sporting clays match every year. He would always have an auction after the shooting and the feeding. My nephew is an electrician and used to go set up the sound system for him. One year at the auction everyone was bidding on the General's guns he was selling but no one would bid on his golf clubs. My nephew did, and got the clubs with a personalized camo bag. He also got his picture accepting the bag from the General.
He was a class act! He will be missed. :( :(

The Gulf War did not seem that long ago to me, I must be getting old. It was almost 22 years ago! Norman died at age 78, that means 22 years ago he was just 56 not much older than I am now. WOW time flies. RIP Stormin' Norman.

For what it's worth, sources say he didn't like the "Stormin Norman" tag.

RIP indeed. A great American leader.

78 seems awfulyl young, nowadays. Did anyone read what he died of? IIRC, he had fought cancer before...

A fine soldier.

A distinguished career.

A moment in the sun.

Well done, General. Go in peace.

You've earned your rest, Sir.
