303 brit powder?

Post by iceman »

My nephew bought himself a nice sporterized Lithgow No 1 mkIII and now he is thinking of taking up reloading. My sister and I are looking around for things that he will need for Christmas presents. I have never loaded for the 303 but I imagine a medium powder should be ok for it. What have you fellas found worked for you ?

Lyman 314299 and 19-20 gr SR4759. I have never loaded jacketed bullets for any of my 5 Enfields.

IMR 4895 and Hornady's 174 SP.

One of my favorite cartridges!

Winchester 760 and a Sierra 180gr soft point has been one of my bestest loads for my 303s.

I have used H4350, IMR 4350, IMR 4895, IMR 4064, IMR 4320 and WW760. I think you can duplicate ball ammo velocities with any of these powders. I now use IMR or H 4350. Charge varies...

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to put a little package together for him. I was thinking IMR 4895 but I'll look into others also. He will be on his first deer hunt with me next weekend so I can talk a bit with him to see if he really is interested in reloading. I think he said 150 gr bullets seem more accurate in his rifle but I don't know how many kinds of the 180s he has tried.

I've had good luck with 3031. I've also tried Varget and I think that it might be a good one, just haven't used it enough yet to be sure.

I hunted for several years with a British .303.My accurate load was a Speer 150 Gr. soft point over 40 grains of IMR4895.

Word is that 3031 was made for the .303, i.e. 303 1. I've read that a couple of times but can't remember the source so I'm not so sure of it now. It does work.

Not sure if this is 100% accurate, but here's is some background on the IMR powders and their intended purposes:

I use Reloder 15 (42 grains) under a Sierra Pro-hunter 180 to almost duplicate military Mk. VII velocity. Very accurate as well.

I used IMR3031 in my 7.7 Arisaka which is basically a rimless 303 Brit.
My sporter Lithgow SMLE is rebarreled to 45/70.

Over here Varget is considered a good powder for the three-oh-three. Its the only one I used.

Again thanks to everyone. I was basically right in that a medium powder should work. I am probably going to put a package of various powders I have on hand that he can try and we will go from there ie imr 4895 rl 15 and i think I have imr 3031 if not my 30-30 needs to be fed.

My No.5MkI ('Jungle Carbine') likes the Hornady 150-gr Spire Point and Win 760.

I'm using IMR 3031. Still developing the load, but right now it is a tame 32 grains of IMR 3031 under a 174 grain Hornady RN. Might boost it up to 33 grains. Then I want to develop a load for my RCBS 180 GC sized to .312.

Make sure you buy a set of Lee Collet Dies and only use the brass that was shot in that 303 and you will be satisfied with case life.

Good advice, those dies do work and I keep the brass separated for each of my three No4s.
