questions on receiver sights

Post by sven556 »

I am planning on putting either a williams or lyman receiver sight on my win 94. I have a couple questions.

Do these sights interfere with carrying the rifle by the receiver? I have large hands and when I was holding the rifle I noticed that my hand covered part of the space that the sight would occupy.

I also need a new front sight, the current sight was broke and the previous owner attempted to fix it, which sight will work with a peep sight and which would you recommend?

Last question, where would a good place to order these items be?

Thanks,
Sven

Your hand may touch the side mount, but after getting used to it, it won't bother you.

You can get any of several front sights from Winchester/Browning. You can also look at Brownells, Midway, etc. Many here prefer a post front like the Sour Dough (Brownells).

The Williams sight can be purchased from the above, or you can go straight to the Williams Gun Sight Co, http://www.williamsgunsight.com/ .
They also have a variety of front sights to look at.

I like the lyman they are a little slimer than the williams. I don't notice a problem with my hand touching the sight , but you will notice it's there.

I use a gold bead sight. But a post sight with a white line down works good in low light. Any front sight you buy , you have to do a little filing to get it in. They usually come with a little extra metal. So keep that in mind if it doesn't want to go in.

www.midwayusa.com usually carries a good variety in stock or Brownells.

That's all that I've used and they've never bothered me. It is sort of like asking if the trigger guard/lever or forearm feel uncomfortable when carrying the gun...

I like the Williams pretty good. I got a front sight from Tim Skinner in Montana. Good easy to see post works for me.

I mounted my Williams on the FORWARD scope mount holes of my 1894 Marlin, and like it better that way. Not as close to the hammer or where my hands seem to want to be, and catches less on brush.

Keep in mind when you are looking at where your hand is in the receiver, if the gun is empty, such as at home, the balance will change forward a little when loaded.

I've had receiver sights on virtually all my levers and never noticed the receiver sight when carrying.

Williams sells a matched-height set for the Winchester 94, in a FireSight fiber-optic front. Regular bead fronts of the proper height may be purchased separately, if a 5D or FP peep is purchased ILO a set.

The FireSight/FP Set is $62 @ MidwayUSA, an FP is $59, a 5D is $35, & Ivory or Gold bead front sights are about $9-$12.

SIGHT COMBO

I really like the LYMAN #66 rear sight and the #17 globe front (with inter-changeable inserts) on my MARLIN 1894s and 1895s. Also get one of the little fold down rear sights to fill the rear barrel sight dove tail; it's handy for times when the receiver sight isn't appropriate...like a CAS match! The LYMAN has a nice quick detach feature. I've used them since 1973 and had one get damaged when it was dropped...and replaced for free by LYMAN.

The SKINNER sights look good also. I am going to look at them a little more closely and order a set.
When they said SHARPS, I always thought BIG 50!
