Couldn't let this little guy go to the pound!!

Post by 2ndovc »

Long story short. This little Rat Terrier was brought home by a friend's teenage daughter. They live in a
rental home and could not keep him. I'd played with him a couple times and when they said he was going to the pound
I told them I'd take him. Super smart and really friendly. He's getting along with the other dogs well so far but he's
had a long day and is pretty worn out.
Only problem is that he came with a good case of fleas! Working on that. Heading to Petsmart in the AM for some more flea stuff. He's had a bath with flea soap and we got a bunch out of him but there's still some in there.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

His name is Jackson, not sure if we'll keep that. The kids are already calling him Jacky. I think he looks more like a Rocco.

That's really good of you to do that. I was looking at rats when I saw Thor.....They will keep you busy just like a Boston, or Jack Russell.

He and our Jack Russell have squared off a couple times. So far he's holding his own even though he's 1/3rd her size! :D
The Dane and Lab could care less.

Comfortis (spinosad) An oral pill. Get them from your vet. Kills fleas and prevents infestations. Killing time about 30 mins. Kills fleas before they can lay eggs. Lasts until they get another dose of those jumpin' little S.O.B.'s. We use it here on the farm for our little Pom house dog, Buzz. He gets them from the yard dogs. Great stuff. No muss, no fuss. I highly recommend it. A good thing you did for the little feller, So here's a ...GOOD ON YA'!

Thanks Guys!!

Calling the Vet on Monday, Will ask about the Comfortis.

My lovely wife was a bit shocked about the new arrival but wasn't upset until she saw the fleas.
We've had four dogs at one time before ( though, I think this is like 3 1/4) but she flipped about the bugs, so I promised to get rid
of them.

I have used Comfortis, but it made my Pekinese pretty sick, so I have gone back to topical meds for fleas and ticks. He threw up for a day after taking it.

Well, Charles, I'm not terribly surprised to read that. Ya' see, Peeks are not really what one would think of as a really, "real" dog, ...at least not one that could hold his own off the couch. Just kidding, old timer (by the way, you and I are the same age, so no offense intended). Our Buzz thinks he's as much dog as our Catahoula, Lab/? mix and Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. These others are our three outside "yard" dogs, as opposed to our working livestock guardian dogs.

Sorry to hear that your Pekinese became ill from the Comfortis. Just wondering if you were provided with the correct dosage for your dog's weight. Know quite a few folks like us who depend on Comfortis and haven't heard of any adverse reactions from those folks. Anyhow, I stick with my recommendation to 2ndovc. In our experience it's much better and easier on "man" and beast than all the topical remedies of which I'm aware.

Way to go Jason,as soon as The Wifes Evil Cat uses up his 9 lives a Rat Terrier will be My next pet. We spent a day in PA last year at one of Her cousins that have one and I had the time of My life just playing with that dog. He ran circles around the other big dogs chased their big house cat up a pine tree all the while fetching a soccer ball for Me that was about as big as He was. He made Me feel like I was Fifty again. .

I'm glad the little fella has found a good home :D , don't forget to spray around where Jackson has been sleeping, fleas love to lay their eggs in carpets and bedding.

While I don't own a dog, I've used the Advantage line on my cats since it came out. The first time we used it, my orange and white male was infested (really bad flea season). Next moring, his pick blanket looked like Gettysburg. In short order he was flea free, and interestingly, so was my yard. I think fleas from the yard bit hm and died before they could breed.

There is a canine version, and my sis has used that with good results. It's Canine Advantix. Does the whole thing fleas, ticks, and I think other parasites as well.

By the way, that's a cute dog you have there. He's a lucky one as well

Hold him completely under water for five to ten minutes and the fleas will die. :o

Just kidding! He looks like a cute little fella. Just hope you get those fleas killed off before your other dogs get them as well.

rat terrier's are cool dogs.
my dad grew up with one and has fond tales of squirrel-hunting - he said his rat terrier climbed trees after squirrels

That's funny!

I'm trying to get a better picture but the charger for my camera is missing ( thanks dear  ).

Looks like we have the fleas under control. A couple good baths and Avantix has worked really well. Little guy was really miserable.

He's getting along pretty well with the other dogs. He loves our great dane but Lucy doesn't want to play, it's so funny watching a seven pound dog take on 120lb beast. :D Our Lab does want to but she plays really rough. Have to be careful witth her.

I've got a 6 lb Maltese and an 85 lb Pitbull.

After the initial squeals from the little dog figuring out that he doesn't want the other dog to step on him (a big foot on a tiny foot and at least one sprained tail, as I recall), they worked it out.

They have terrific fun and are good friends.

Little guy got a good working over at the Vet's today. He has some intestinal parasites but
she said it's common in puppies and easily taken care of, otherwise he's in great health and no signs of the
dreaded fleas!

Back in a month for more shots, the dreaded "Fixing" :o , and a microchip.

Super cool ! --- He's a cute little fella, as long as the other dogs don't get jealous!

The little dog i brought home last week has turned into my constant little office companion --- but she has a strained relationship with my little blueheeler mix dog. My heeler was used to being the "baby" of the bunch i guess and now feels somewhat threatened, so i dont leave them unsupervised too much just yet ----

It is just funny as he-- to watch an 8 lb dog running around in big looping circles in the yard with a gaggle of 30-70 lb dogs in hot pursuit though ! you can't fake that kind of good ol fashioned comedy straight from mother nature

I love watching the battle for "Top Dog". This little guy is so tiny but has a big set of ****'s.
He's so funny and cute it's a riot watching him stand up to the Girls! I think he's going to come out on top.
He just won't back down.
So far nobody has has gotten hurt and the little guy has been getting his way. His main competitor
is our Jack Russell, she's a stinker. The Dane and Lab don't care.
They just want to play.
