Whyizzit

Post by earlmck »

You get 50 lbs of "steer manure" in a plastic bag -- dang thing is so fragile you poke a finger through it just trying to pull it out of the trunk of the wife's car. Flimmzeee!

You get 10 oz bag of potato chips -- you better have a good sharp knife or you're not breaking into it right away. You could make functional guns -- barrel and all -- out of the plastic they use for potato chip bags. Double Tough!

I keep scissors in the kitchen. Lots of people have impaled their hands trying to open packages with butcher knives.

That's true, but I find the chips taste better, so they're worth the extra work. :D

The OI cynical (but true) answer?

Nobody wants to put toxins into/tamper with a manure bag.

If Frito Lay could get away with a thin bag, they would.

That depends - I've gotten some 'hot, spicy' chips over the years that must have really come from buffalos...

Eat the bag first.

It's probably better for you anyway.

Just peel the two halves of the bag apart (at the top). Works much easier than trying to tear the bag open. Don't eat 'em immediately after opening the manure bags...

Hmm...

I think it's because nobody walks up and down the aisles at Home Depot popping open random 50lb bags of BS looking for a free snack.

Making packaging difficult to open keeps the riff-raff ay bay.

Wonderful to be able to bring such a vital subject to the attention of this crew and get such sage observations. But on a serious note, I'm worried that "potato chip bag plastic" may be such a vital national resource and we are just squandering it. Here's this marvelous substance -- could be used as lightweight armor for the personnel carriers carrying our troops into IED alley. And we use it to protect potato chips. It could be used to protect space probes against cosmic debris. And we use it to protect potato chips.

14 years ago I got tired of having my saw files dull themselves riding in my fanny pack while I cut trees. Made file scabbards out of potato chip bag wrapped around the file with some duct tape to hold the shape. I finally replaced one of the little scabbards -- the duct tape had been reinforced too many times and I was getting a mess; the plastic bag portion was in perfect condition after 14 years of protecting whole generations of saw files. And we use it to protect potato chips for a few days. Waste, fellows. Sheer unconscionable waste!

Think "tamper resistant", and remind yourself that these are making you "safer".

But, on a "on topic" note; I somethimes haul those potatoe chips from the Columbia River Valley in OR to TX. One of the stipulations is that I, "Do NOT drive above 6,000 feet". I always ask the shipper, "name that route"! They can't. Sherman Pass in WY is one of the highest I have to cross... a little over 8,000ft, them little bags GOTTA be tough to handle the pressure inside, lack of it outside and not burst! :P  :o

A friend of mine always buys a bag to sit on the seat next to him as he drives, as he sez, "when IT pops, I know I'm in trouble!" I get the munchies... and usually have it eaten before the first high pass... which is before you even leave OR!

Griff, that's interesting about elevation and bags of tater chips. Had no idea.
Now, Earl, if you want to get me fired up, lets talk about those hard plastic clamshells that lots of stuff come in these days.
