My "New" Hunting Rifle: Model 88
It only took me about four years to finally get the scope (VXIII, 30mm, 1.5-5, lit reticule) on this .284 Win. beauty, but, it's ready to sight in and go hunting. I hope it's a tack driver, but if it does Minute of Pop Can @ 250 yds, I'll be real happy. Once I see it's potential with Factory 150gr Win stuff, I'll load it up at about 7mm Mauser +P levels....don't need to be so hard on the Auld Girl. Here's a plug for Welcher's Gun Shop in Tacoma: I've been a customer for quite awhile, and John mounted my scope for free after I bought the rings....I really like that shop. Fair, honest, and usually better prices than most.

Gteat combo. Friend of mine had one. I'll check yo see what ammo he liked.
Re: My "New" Hunting Rifle: Model 88
I already have some Win. 748, and some Nosler Partition 140s.....I'll find a sweet spot with them. Those should be plenty for any deer, elk, or black bear around here. I'll use the factory Winchester 150s for now.Old Savage wrote:Gteat combo. Friend of mine had one. I'll check yo see what ammo he liked.

Well dang, "Minute of Pop Can @ 250 yds" would be a tack driver around this outfit...BlaineG wrote: I hope it's a tack driver, but if it does Minute of Pop Can @ 250 yds, I'll be real happy.
Yep, that's a beauty, Blaine.

Re: My "New" Hunting Rifle: Model 88
Nice 88 Blaine. Looks to be a post 1964 with the newer style checkering and type III or IV mag. I hope you're as happy with it as I am with mine. I agree that "Minute of Pop Can @ 250 yds" is a great benchmark. I much prefer shooting at things rather than at paper. I'm found of "Minute of Bowling Pin @ 300 yds" with mine but then I've got a higher power scope on my .308 at 3-9x40. That said, I was able to 'kill' a bowling pin at 300 yds using only iron sights on my M1A too. Makes me smile!!

I'll range a rampaging white rock to about 100yd, shoot at it, and adjust accordingly. Around here, it's hard to find that much open space. I hate going to ranges.COSteve wrote:Nice 88 Blaine. Sometimes I wish it was a .308.....life would be a little more simple. It's way cool to scrounge for .284 stuff, thoughdkmlever wrote:Mine is a model 88 in 308 with open sites and it has killed a elk or three, yours is a nice rifle you will be happy with it.

Blaine,
With that sweet looking baby, you could sell it and buy TWO .308 Model 88's. Personally, I'd stick with the .284 as it and the 308 are mighty close. Besides, you are in your own world there.....308's are a half dollar a dozen where the 284 is a Double Eagle.

Most everything is for sale, but, I'd ask enough for this one that I'm sure I could keep it around for awhile Besides, the bluing is rough in places.....I'm sure no one would want itSixgun wrote:Blaine,

Several years ago, a riding acquaintance was relocating to Alaska for work, and needed moving money. He asked for $400. I gave him a little more than that, but, it was still a steal for me.

Agree about Welcher's gun shop.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Blaine,
The 88's are tack drivers but are a delicate rifle.
I had a near new pre-64 in .308, 5 shot ragged grups at 100 yds but a
minor fall snapped the stock and broke the scope. Really thin wood at the wrist.
Cuidado Amigo!

Re: My "New" Hunting Rifle: Model 88
I have two 88s in 308 and like them very much. They are stocked for offhand and field shooting and kick harder than necessary from the bench.
Re: My "New" Hunting Rifle: Model 88
You can probably use 7.5x55 Swiss cases in a pinch. You will have to reduce them, I bought some .284 cases to reload my 7.5x55 swiss, but have been lucky to find the correct 7.5x55 brass already.BlaineG wrote:Sometimes I wish it was a .308.....life would be a little more simple.
