Transformation Of A 642 'Smith

Post by Sixgun »

Well, it was hot today (102) as I was doomed to stay in the house where idle time is the devils workshop. While looking at my carry gun, a hammerless 642 'Smith, I realized it was beat---mechanically great, but beat looking. That baby has been riding in my back pocket, the floor of the Jeep, in snow, rain, dropped a couple of hundred times, shot 1583 times all since September of '96.

Anyway, I still had part of a can of Brownells Oven Coat OD green paint left over from my Savage '99 project, so.....I went to work. Stipped her down to nothing, sandblasted the frame, cleaned her up, painted, and stuck her in the over for an hour. This stuff is fantastic if applied correctly and wears better than any other kind of finish.

I only did the aluminum part of the frame and left the stainless parts untouched.-----------Sixgun

Before---yea, crappy pic, but I can't go back in time to take another.

So, you shoot rifles lefty and handguns right handed?

I still have my 642 but I haven't got mad enough at it to change its color. It shoots right where I aim it every time. Of course I haven't fired it over 10 yds. It's right here with me loaded with 180's.

Love my 642 in the summer and that is an interesting treatment.

Frank,
Yea, I'm majorly left eye dominant but right handed. My brain adapted when I was a kid--don't know why but it was always natural for me to shoot a rifle left handed but a handgun right handed. Even in the pic you will see my left eye is open--its called cross shooting. Maybe being half Italian has something to do with it, I dunno.

Very nice! Do you have an old oven for such projects, or to you sneak into the kitchen of your Italian wife and hope she doesn't catch you using her oven?

Kid,
No old oven. The kitchen oven works fine and the process leaves no smell or anything else to worry about. I'm told that there is another type of coating that leaves a mess and stick of some sort but not this kind.

Its really easy to do, just follow the directions. The epoxy paint is sold through Brownells.-------------Sixgun

Sixgun,
Like you I shoot a rifle naturally left handed and a pistol mainly right handed.I am also left eye dominant so I "cross sight".It just seems natural to me.
My main carry is a Smith 638.I like to have the option of single action.
