Harmonica anyone?

Post by El Chivo »

I was thinking of getting a truly chromatic harmonica (the one I have skips a note or two to preserve the nice chords).

I ran across this:

http://www.wwbw.com/Suzuki-F-48S-Fabulo ... +harmonica

and this:

time to upgrade?

At that price it should mow the grass and paint the house at the same time. I like special 20's, and while I have a chromatic, I have never warmed up to it much.

One of y'all posted a link to Buddy Green playing his Marine Band at Carnegie Hall and that got me started. I started with a Marine Band 1896 in C, then I heard Buddy Green released a new CD where he Played ASHOKAN FAREWELL, which I love so I went and bought a Marine Band Blues A harp. It wasn't quite right and after talking to a harp player at church I found out he plays Lee Oskars so I thought I'd try one of them and picked up a Lee Oakar A flat.
All three of them play different and it's easier to play while I'm driving than the banjo was.

Sugar: Unless somebody objects..

Monte: I object!

Sugar: Don't you like music?

Monte: I Do...!

I'm all for good quality, but for those prices I'll stick to my Hohner.

Ok, let me rephrase that...I'll stick to my $10 Hohner

I have several chromatic harmonicas as well as some diatonics.

Couple custom made. Favorite is the Hohner CX-12 model in the Tenor tuning and with an add-on metal mouthpiece.

The Tenor tuning is an octave lower than standard.

After many years of playing 16 holers find I much prefer the 12 hole with tenor tuning.

There's lots of harmonica players and many left out of my list below. (Thought some of you might want to buy or listen to some of their playing.) Buddy Greene is the only one I've seen on YouTube but should be others there.

Charles Leighton. Not well known by general public but to me he's the greatest chromatic harmonicist.
Larry Adler. The most famous chromatic harmonica player but not nearly as good as Leighton.
Robert Bonfiglio. Can do it all. Chromatic, diatonic, classical, jazz, blues
Tommy Reilly. English, and very good. Jazz/pop standards, chromatic.
Toots Thielemans. Considered the best with true jazz type music. Also good guitarist.
Howard Levy. Considered the best with diatonic.
Buddy Greene. Very good and on YouTube. Diatonic.
Charlie McCoy. One of the best with country/western type music and blues. Lots of recordings.

I have a custom made chromatic harmonica that is unique in that you can play the sharps and flats by moving the special mouthpiece up and down with your mouth rather than pushing the "button" on right side. When holding it in a "harmonica holder" that hangs from your neck you can play it along with your guitar. Have played it very little and need to "get with it!"

Wow Don that's getting pretty complex for me. I'll just stick to the simple toys for a simple mind like mine.

The KISS way, Keep It Simple Stupid. I find I get in less trouble that way.

Thanks for the new names to look up. Buddy Green and Charlie McCoy are the only two that I've heard of.
