So nobody misses out, the Winchester book is filled with lovely pictures of all the Winchester rifles.
Guns of the American West has the best pictures i`ve ever seen in a book of pistols, revolvers, holsters ect....
The Guns of old west is another book full of great pictures .
Can`t wait to get the 1876 Winchester book.

Got the book on the 76 so assuming no one has ever read it here are some interesting things i found in it.
Here is the results of strength test done on the 76 action.
Interesting.
Aparently there was some dabbling with the 45-70 cartridge.
The 45-60 was for whimps i guess.

I really like "The Winchester Book" by Madis, and Williamsons "The Winchester Lever Legacy".
Sam Fadalas book on the Winchester 94 is good reading also.

Best one I've ever read Pitchy is Paco Kelley's Leverguns. Long out of print so it's costs like the dickens. But it was worth it to me. One of my keepers. Learned a ton from it.
It doesn't have the beautiful color plates those do, but boy is it full of good, useable data. Wish I'd read it as a boy, I'd've done alot of things differently.

I'd second the Marlin book and Venturino's book and happen to own them both . The 94 book makes me yawn , however I do have the Madis Winchester book and keep it around for reference .
I must confess in my younger days I was a Winchester person , then I grew older and saw the error of my ways
All BS aside I like most any books that are relative to an intrest of mine .
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !
Whoops missed Petes reply
The shooting leverguns of the old west looks good too, and the Marlin book

If a fellow shoots alot of different lever action calibers and shoots cast bullets that Venturino book is worth it's wait in gold !
Matter of fact that book WAS THE CAUSE of me buying many of the lever actions I had a couple years back just because I wanted to try different things . I used his loading data as well in a good many of the rifles . Typically he starts at what I think is a little light to medium but they are certainly an excellent starting point !

- Lever Action Magazine Rifles Derived from the Patents of Andrew Burgess, by S.L.Maxwell
- Winchester Repeating Arms Company, Its History & Development from 1865-1981, by H.G.Houze
- The Winchester Book, by G.Madis
I don't currently have ready access to Brophy's book, but I recall it was pretty good reading. I own a copy of Les Quick's book on the Henry; it's good but not quite in the same league as those above.
That '76 book sure looks interesting. I've never looked through that one.

Dale Olsons book "The Burgess Long range Repeating Rifle Model 1878" is interesting. It isn't very large, but has some interesting information about the guns, and some good stories of their use.

I'm pretty sure the 45-100 referes only to the bore diameter. The book "10 Old Gun Catalogs" had a number of entries in old ads that had caliber shown in that way. The Brits still do it, tho it isnt very informative.

If I recall it was Amazon. But if you Google "Used books" you'll get some good sellers. Be prepared for a price well north of $100.

For which book, i bought the 76 Win. book for 42.00 shipped and the shooting guns of the old west for 25.00

Thats a hard question Pitch as I have been addicted to these guns for over 40 years and during that time I have amassed 2-300 books with many on the leverguns. I'd have to say the Madis book is the most important and Venturino's book is the most fun.-------------Sixgun

Glad you like it, Pitchy. I've about wore mine right out. It is one of those books that I just pick back up every once in a while. Did you order Williamson's 'The Winchester Lever Legacy'?
