M14 still holding it's own..

Post by Les Staley »

Dug the ole girl out of the safe and snugged her up on bags on the porch.. shot a couple of 1.2" groups at the 100 yd target.. This one is one of the Polytech M14S that I rebuilt a few years back when good GI stuff was still available from the CMP. It has a SAK barrel TE and ME both 0. a TRW bolt HS at 1.631, a TRW fire control group, a Smith Enterprises scope mount, in a USGI fiberglass stock. It has killed antelope, whitetail, hogs and has been wolf hunting in Idaho, maybe right here in Wyoming if they ever get their poop in a group..guess it's ready.. Les

Les,
The M1-A is a extreme favorite of mine. 'Ya leave 'em alone for a year, then take 'em out and shoot a 1" group. :D Its also a great gun for the upcoming revolution.

Danny, Like this? :D I'm selective about shooting this stuff up. ----------Sixgun

Big Sky; I've got four or five 20rd boxes of that ammo, been saveing it.. but have PLENTY of nato spec in crates.. bought it cheap ten years ago.. $139 delivered to my porch.. Portugese, Austrailian, some South African.. etc... Just a comfort knowing it is there.. Les

Sixgun your right, it would be neat if we could all get together and shoot each others guns.
Then a person wouldn`t have to buy so many, never had a M-14

When I went into the Corps, they were only issuing the M16A1. Never shot the M14. We have some with the department and I've handled a few, but never shot one. I've always heard they're shooters.

Never felt the love for an M-14 that I get outta my M-1. Nothin' like hearing "P-I-I-I-N-G" to know it's feedin' time again! Once you've busted your thumb on a Garand, you know the meaning of respect! As I rub the scar! :P

Sixgun thats the stuff dont burn it less you have a problem that cant be handled with cheaper ammo, when I was doing ADC shooting in the 80's I whacked many a yote waaay out there with a m14. The LC ammo worked real good in RVN too. IMO a m14 is better than a bolt gun any day I just love the feeling of a tuned 14.
Les that LC stuff is premium ammo 173 gr at 2550 fps. the run of the mill fmc 308 150 gr from the service will do quite nice out to 300 yds or so on varmits and such. FMC will work on a wolf/yote too wont tear up the hide like a soft point will. danny

Danny, I know what you mean on the match stuff. Very selective shooting, but I do see it all the time at shows. So.......if I don't shoot it, someone else will in another 20 years. :D

Here 'ya go Kid. Fresh off the press. :D
The rifle wears a 4 and 1/2 X 14 Nikon with a 4th generation Springfield Armory mount. This rig will bust clay birds at 500 meters all day with a 150 Hornady with a mess of BL-C2.
Image

The 4th gen scope mount allows the use of iron sights with the scope. Even so, if the scope gets busted up, its a quick twist of 2 big screws and the scope pops off. :D ----------Sixgun

The 20 round box magazine might be better for combat, but to me it's just boring to shoot compared to the M1.

That's all I have. Given to me by someone to shoot, but it's too cool to use up. 8)

As far as getting together…. er… I dunno, you tell me. :D

That's the serious dress.

I also have a fancy outfit it wears when I'm not beating up on it.

Yeah I know it's a old thread but I just had to post a pic or two of my girl. It is a real E2 stock I got severasl years ago and she is VERY accurate. Lot o fun too! Course I am a Pennsylvania citizen who is clinging to his God, guns and religion, but that doesn't make me all BAD right.

Fordwannabe,
I was checking out your pics of the M1-A and I noticed you have the same bipod that I HAD on mine. Its a neat bi-pod and very functional but........when mine was on, it shot 6-8" groups at 100 when before I put it on I was shooting that at 500 meters. I took it off nd the groups came right back.

How does yours shoot with it on?--------Sixgun

Great rifle the Springfield M1A Bush. Every time a real pleasure to use it. A gun that I would not like missing.

Hey Six, yes it is detrimintal to the accuracy, BUT I put a piece of inner tube around the tube where the bi pod attaches and it made it better. It isn't as good as on a bag, but it is acceptable...ish. The upward pressure on the barrel seems to be the issue. I had the stock glassbedded by an old guy around here who did all the competion garands and M1As and he knew how to make it better if not good and he's the one who told me about the inner tube. Sadly he has had a stroke and the last I knew wasn't doing any gun work.
