Just bought a Taylor 1865 Spencer 45 colt

Post by JNG »

I put this rifle on my wish list with Buds gunshop in Aug. Got the e-mail yesterday, they had 2 in stock.
I put a deposit on it and am going down to Lexington Ky Friday with the little lady to pick it up and a over nighter.
Does anybody have good loads for this jewel?

Thank you,
Joe

I'd just stick with standard loads. One of my favorite is a 250 grain Laser Cast rnfp over 7.0 grains of W231 in a Win Case with WLP primers - 800 fps from a revolver and 1000 fps from my Marlin 94 Cowboy with 24" barrel.

Congrats! Cool carbine!

I want one. How much are they? Would you mind?

Price was just under $1200.00 at Buds with the CC fee. I sold one of my 94's to help with the cost. Just ran my DVD on the Civil War, where they were talking about the Spencer. Now my Sharps carbine has a buddy.
Also thanks for load info. Do you'll think I'll have any problem running RCBS 270 bullets through it. I'll keep pressure to standard colt loads. If I need more, there is the Sharps.

Thanks, Is it actually the rifle or the carbine?
Buffalo Arms has $1,400 as the price and they don't list the 45 Colt caliber.

Don't have any experience of the repros but I do have two original Spencers and they are very critical on cartridge overall length and the shape of the bullet ogive as the upper breech block has to cam the following cartridge back into the magazine as it closes. Might be worth asking the question over on the Spencer Shooting Society forum http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?board=35.0

Try a 255 SWC & 7 grains of Unique, it's a tack-driver with my Uberti/Artillary 5 1/2" SAA. This is a Cowboy load and should preform very well in the Spencer.

Mine is in .44 Russian. It is quite a fun gun to shoot. You'll need to make yourself a Blakeslee Box for it. I made one out of a wine box I bought at TJ Maxx for less than $10. It was such a fun project I made another one for my son for .22 rimfire rounds to use with his Henry H100L. If you do a search here you should be able to find the post on it, though it is several years old.

Have fun! :D
