How important are handguns to you?

Post by L_Kilkenny »

Handguns for me have always had a "cool" factor. Blame it on Roy Rodgers, John Wayne or even Mel Gibson for that matter. But for some reason they are just getting less and less important to me. It's gotten to the point that with the infinite number of 1 gun, 3 guns, favorite guns, etc discussions we may have, handguns rarely if ever make it into my "must have" category. Heck even on the occasional "If you could go back to 1870" threads we have around here I find myself pickin rifles and shotguns and only include handguns "just because". I could care less anymore if I'm carrying a second gun of any sort out hunting and I'd just as soon hunt with a rifle or shotgun. With time and money limited by business, kids, wife and house I'm just fine to be hunting or fishing or camping etc vs. spending time/money at the range or plinkin. As I stated in another thread I'd almost take 1 day in the field to 10 days at the range. You could easily change the word day(s) to hour(s) in that sentence. To me the term "truck gun" applies to shotguns and carbines and handguns never enter my thoughts for it anymore. When it comes to SD I rarely CC and I'd rather use a shotgun or carbine for HD.

I could very easily see myself choosing one handgun for the rare times I may need or want it and oil the others up and hang em on the wall.

What say you? How important to you are they and why?

Handguns are very important to me. Just as important as long guns. I carry one with me at all times. I dont live too far from New Orleans and that element often finds itself on my side of the lake. I would rather have and not need than need and not have.

Handguns are very important to me. Without them I'd be handicapped.
Rifles are great tools for a lot of things, but they are just not compact and easily carried.
In AZ where I could carry open or carry a rifle out in the desert if I wanted I found that carrying the one handgun was the way to go. It kept my hands free for what ever I needed them for and was much less fatiguing than even carrying a rifle with a sling.

Then of course there's the fact that I'm more of a hand gunner than a rifle man and you see how they are to me quite important.

My handgun goes on every single day like a wristwatch. Without it I would be vulnerable prey. A handgun is the most important firearm to me! I love my rifles and shotguns but I cannot carry them at all times and without anyone knowing it.

Private ownership of handguns is what makes the USA different than most other countries - and keeps our freedoms in tact!

I could probably go my whole life with just my 4" Colt Lawman as a sidearm, (its all i had for many many years). I truck carry all the time, but only recently have i started carrying a pistol on my person regularly, but i have carried the LAwman before discreetly in a camera bag on a limited basis and when i felt there may be a need -- I like to carry the Lawman as a bowhunting sidearm too, - we have seen cougar paw prints at my hunting location and the big revolver gives me a little more peace of mind.
Its also all i would need for a bump-in the night gun - plus its a capable plinker with 38 Spl loads .
I bought this gun for $180 years ago with a "distressed finish" because it was evidently rarely ever taken out of some sweaty policeman's leather holster --- i immediately took it to my gunsmith to parkerize it so it would be low maintenance - that little bit of customization made it "mine" in my eyes

So with all that said, i have to admit that handguns (plural) are probably not nearly as important to me as having one or two rock solid handguns i know i can rely on .

But variety is the spice of life :D -- so i enjoy shooting and carrying several different kinds of handguns now depending on the circumstance. My Glock 20 and 1911's are lots of fun at the range, and in the case of the Glock, gives me a lot more firepower in cougar country --- and my tiny Sig 380 is infinitely more concealable than a 4" 357 if im ever on the town in a poor area. Single ACtion Ruger .22 is an awesome plinker too

--the only one i "need" pictured below" :) (but not the only one i use or want)

I have a Smith 686 for home defense, though I do not carry. I did dress it up with some buffalo horn grips - looks sharp.

I need to shoot it to keep up the familiarity. But I don't think it's particularly fun to shoot and it's certainly more expensive (50 rounds in 12 minutes, vs. 50 rounds in 3 hours with my single shots)

So I find my long guns a lot more entertaining.

Very,...though my interests are pretty equally split between long guns and short. The handgun is important to me for reasons others have stated--hard-to-impossible to carry a long gun around the same. In the nearby thread on "...that ONE gun..." my natural focus went to rifles. They were the guns of my youth, and the ones with family/sentimental value. If you take sentiment out of the equation, the practical answer would be a handgun. More specifically, a tie between one of my Ruger shorty New Vaqueros (Montado and .44 Sheriff), an endearing trio of Single Six .32s, and even more pragmatically a S&W 65 Lady Smith. The one that almost literally goes with me everywhere--the cargo pocket wonder--is an airweight .32 H&R Mag. Can't beat it--or any of 'em!

i virtually always carry a handgun, even at home. the truck has several , as well as a shotgun in easy reach. the locked up back of truck has rifles, handguns, and more shotguns. but the handgun is my constant companion.

I hate to admit it but I haven't fired one of my handguns in over a year. I always have a Derringer in .22LR in my fishing tackle box and I carry a .38 S&W Special either physically on me or in my truck. It is a Taurus 85CH snub-nose. Also, in .38 S&W Special I have a S&W Model 10HB and a S&W Model 64. All those handgus and I haven't fired any of them in over a year -- actually going on 2-years.

When out and about in the field and in the woods, I generally carry a Remington 870 12ga shotgun. I don't get out much because of my knees but I still get out on the odd day.

I have always been a handgun nut besides haveing been required to pack one for over 35 years on the job. I have the concealed weapons permit but seldom carry around my peacefull area. Do take one along traveling out of our areas on trips. Always pack in the boonies when we ride the quad and that is our favorite thing to do. Carrying a rifle or shotgun would look a little redicules in and out of motels etc. Thats why they call them "handguns". I admit I have far more than I need, but then I also have far more rifles and shotguns than I need too. Besides being the nessasary tool factor they are a hobby plus the collector factor. At over 70 years old it seems I have cooled off from many years ago and now most of them are really safe queens that I have accumilated but still cant seem to part with. Were I to live life again I probley wouldnt have or buy the amount I have, but the ones I owned would be super high quality, rare etc. Come to think of it most that I own are anyway. My house is old and small, My two trucks are 11 and 12 years old, but we have everything we need. From that, I hate selling any of my collection because from experiance two weeks latter I wouldnt be able to tell you what I did with the money. No money and no gun! Yet considering my age and the fact that my wife is 17 years younger I know I should be selling off the overflow, but I cant seem to bring myself to it yet.

Right now all my handguns are kept in Pa at my friends Gun Store.
I have procrastinated on getting my NY CCW(but will this year without doubt)So that already kinda says how muchI I feel I need them.
I have got to tell you guys,I know the world is changing but all the years (many)I had a CCW I actually rarely carried a piece.
Few years back had some friends at work talking about how they carried on and on like at a shopping mall.
Honestly, I thought they were somewhat of being some paranoid nuts.

Some times yes I might carry a piece(most times no)
Guess there is that remote chance you might get attacked and it might save you/family/someone else.
You also might get killed going for a ride in a car or by a bear deer hunting too.
I will say one thing,I don't know the percentage comparison, but having a gun(can also get you killed too)
If you go by the rule (you pull it/you shoot it)well you are probably better with it.
If not(maybe not)For the person that pulls a gun on someone at very close range(you know, don't move or????)
You might with the right person and that gun just got you killed.
Will I get my NYS CCW(go through all the stuff)----yes
Is it my most important gun(NO) I favor a rifle/carbine/shotgun
For a LEO or someone that really has been there/done that in ready to go all the way(right then/right now)guess it's cool, but also there are many that are paranoid and make them feel far away from when they got their heads put in the toilet in High School making them brave.

Just saying maybe it's cause I live in a lower keyed area, but feeling afraid/unsafe/to go outside without a piece)not being a LEO/PH/living in remote Alaska but just in (Mayberry USA)------------------That's Sad!

People are different/act different (example) my one brother (best of us 3) is the type that if at a bar at a table with wife and a tipsy loud mouth sits down and comes on to his women(he might just leave)Then there is me and other brother (he wouldn't be sitting there long)Different people/Different level of what's what!
I see this with people and dogs(like guns) me???(I protect my dog)instead of hoping the dog protects me.
Not trying to pretend to be some bad a##,just being honest of my feelings! :)
Whatever works for ya guys!

ps---Its not to say if tonight I was going to Rochester,NY (or maybe about anywhere)staying overnight in some Hotel/Motel I might not take my Sub2000(in its tiny laptop case)or my P32/P40 etc. if had my current NYS CCW------------but mostly don't feel the need! (the CCW deal,it's just getting paperwork/filling it out/bla bla bla and paying couple hundred bucks(I just keep saying, maybe tomorrow)

My old beat-up S&W 10-6 4" heavy barrel with targer hammer and trigger and Hogue grips is rarely far from my person. I guess you could say it is very important to me.

MADMAN4570,
Do you own a fire extinguisher ? Surely you do and you and I both hope you never have to use it. Carried handguns are no different. They buy you time until the fire department or the cops show up or you can retreat to your real gun, your shotgun! :)
I'm not big on truck carry, though. If you can get to your truck, leave or run over them. That truck is much more powerful and easier to aim, too.
A sidearm should be on your side. If you gotta go get it, get the shotgun. :!:

I very rarely touch any of my own handguns anymore !

Although at present I only own 5 or 6 .

The 629 4" stays on top of the bedside table and all the rest stay locked in a safe .

My intrest in shooting handguns is not that great anylonger .

The 629 will most likely make the trip to Arkansas with me friday and I'll carry it while looking for piggies but it'll be the first tiem I took it hunting ina number of years .

Well I have been messing with a Contender in 444 a bit over the last 6-8 months . But in reality I don't really consider that a handgun .

I suppose my two favourite handguns are the Colt Scout Buntline Special 22LR my maternal grandfather purchased in 1962 and a Ruger Single Six 22LR my father has had since in the late 50's or early 60's .

Let me start off by saying nothing against any ex cops here or present for that matter . What I'm about to say is based on the majority of the cops I've been around at the local gunclub .

Now then I would say 75% of the local cops I've had the pleasure or displeasure of being around at my local club cannot shoot as well as they would lead one to believe . As a matter of fact that 75% generally shot worse then most of the folks at the club and it wasn't just with handguns .
By my own admission I am no longer what I would call a good pistol/revolver shot . But even with my own admissions I was better then most of these guys .

Now on the other hand I know exactly 5 cops and or excops that can shoot the eyes out of a nat at 15 yards with a revolver or pistol .
These same gentleman are also excellent rifle shots , with one or two being fair to middlin with a shotgun (skeet, trap , birds) .

I might further add these same 5 guys are not always droning on and on about tactical this and defensive shooting that . They are all pretty low keyed about the whole thing which probably makes me like them a good bit more then the other 75% .

Now could this all have to do with the fact that those five fellows are ALL 40+ and the other 75% are mainly under 40 with a good many still being under 30 . Perhaps the fact that they'd not been in the profession that long and had time to mellow was part of the reason they didn't shoot as well and were not always fun to be around .

Most cops are not 'gun people' so that is not surprising.

I have nearly as many handguns as rifles and have one on me anywhere I legally can.

Since even in Texas it's frowned upon to go shopping with an M4 carbine strapped to your chest, a pistol suffices.

I've been in a lot of bad places aiming guns at people getting paid to do so.

The three times I've had to on my own dime, twice I had a handgun, the other time, a shotgun.

Yes, they're important.

To me, handguns are important as hobby items. Although I have a permit, I seldom carry. I just love shooting them, and handgun ammo is easy to reload. One of my Ruger Super Blackhawks would be my favorite.

I've had my CCW for about 5 years. I didn't carry much at first as the company I
work for didn't allow it. However about a year and a half ago the boss' daughter
got that policy changed! :D
Now I either have my Glock 26 or Sig p238 just about every day.

We have a company of about fifty people and a small number were a little
concerned about firearms in the building. I told one of them that
if you ever saw my pistol out of my bag ( i have a "hag bag" for all my electronic gizmos).
then something very bad was happening or about to. That seemed to make since to him.

Our office is in an industrial park a couple miles from downtown Cleveland and the
neighborhood has had a lot of thefts and other bs going down. Some of these guys are just
walking right into these businesses in the middle of the day and walking off with stuff.

Plus i get into some pretty nasty areas during my sales calls. Nice to know I have
a little friend along.

Very important to me for defense, both in the home and in the wilderness.

Not ON me all the time at home, but I have them at the places that I would be. Bed...computer desk, front door, tv table, and I should get one for the bathroom. I take a mouse gun when I leave to be around town (currently a little Ruger 380) and have the 1911 for when I open carry or in the woods. That still leaves 10 or so that are in the safe (but loaded). I also have a 30wcf, a 9422M, and 870 Tactical loaded and handy. Woe be unto them

I hardly carry off the place any more since the commies made it so ya have to pay for gun safety and the permit to carry which is only good for five years. :x
At home that`s a different story, always been fascinated with handguns and carrying them .
Just like the beauty of them and the history of some styles.

I carry at least one 24/7 most times two. 22Mag derringer is always there and a Glock 23 nearly always there. Even if I didnt have my rifles I would probaby still pick the Glock 23 because while not ideal I could still drop a deer at close range and in this worlds current environment I don't want to be without a defensive firearm. I can and do also carry it while working around the house and its available but not in the way.

Not as important as I'd like them to be due to living in "The Demokratik People's Republik of Hawaii" where concealed & open carry are against the law with the rare exception being a very few hunting areas which allow open carry pistol hunting of big game during season.

Im actually with ya on this one ---

If im doing what i'm doing today (looking at new trucks at dealerships, and going to the gym) - its stupid to carry my heater with me , -- however , if im going out to eat at Oklahoma City's Cattlemens steakhouse (which is in our stockyards that borders a high crime area) - then darn right i will find a place to pack one. I also pack heat when i am riding my mountain bike, as there was a prostitutes body found near my trail head a couple of weeks ago (but i have had a weapon in my camelback for years anyway out of suspicion that this type of behavior may go on)

There is occasional small town crime where i live, but i generally do things like leave my truck running when i go into a store for beer, - i frequently leave the keys in my truck (steal it ... please? Im insured! ) - basically im at ease in my own community

I dont leave my door unlocked at night or anything, but location is everything

Re: How important are handguns to you?

Post by shooter »

I love them. When I am woods bumming and not necessarily hunting I will carry a handgun only. I like that it's light, out of the way and leaves both of my hands free to do whatever needs doing. I don't carry a rifle unless I feel the need or I'm actually hunting something that might require a longer shot. Even if hunting and I'm with someone carrying a rifle I will often leave mine at camp when going for walks. I love rifles and I am a better shot with a rifle, but I'm fair with a pistol also. I don't CC, but it's only because I've procrastinated in getting mine. When I get it this year I will likely have one on me at all times.

Everything has its place. There are situations where I would rather have a rifle than a handgun, and situations where I would rather have a handgun than a rifle. I like that you can carry a handgun and nobody knows you have one. I will say this also: When I am carrying a rifle I always carry a handgun also, so that kinda sums up how important it is to me.

Real important, probably more important from a well being standpoint. I doubt I'll ever use a rifle for self defense, but while I hope it never happens I always have a hangun either on me or close by. Almost always anyway, unfortunately theres places virtually nobody except LE can carry and with NYS to the west & MA to the north I either break the law or make a mad dash thru to the states beyond who recognize the Constitution.

We are familiar with the saying "from my cold dead hands".... well, for me, that congers up a handgun.

Handguns are usualy one of the first targets of the communists and other evil sorts due to the fact that they are so easily concealed and make excellent tools for dealing with the minions of the tyrants. Not to mention that the ammo is more easily made and economical.

So, they are very important to me and always will be - even after I can see well enough to place my shots at 50 yards or beyond...

it's awful hard to conceal a rifle most of the time. :)

I see a few people here who think they can tell when things will not be bad for them. Either they're a lot more psychic than I am, or they could be wrong one day... hope for you, it's not the latter. "probably" nothing will ever happen, but you still have a spare tire when you "probably" won't have a flat.

I carry either a Smith Model 638 or a .22 magnum North American mini revolver all the time.Sometimes both of them.I just like having a handgun close at hand.I admittedly am no great pistol shot but they are handy to have.

carrying my handgun, to me, is like wearing my seatbelt. i dont even think about it, i just do it, and i never try to decide whether where i am going or what i am doing requires either of them. hopefully i will never have a serious incident where either of them has to play their role.

A handgun is my constant companion, and a great comfort wherever I go.. A great many of my friends and neighbors feel and act the same way, which is a Huge reason that crimes against strangers are almost unheard of in these parts.. A crook would have to assume that anyone he didn't know was probably packing.. Not a good choice for a stickup or home invasion or carjacking.. And those activities are virtually unheard of around here..

Does packing a pistol mean I'm paranoid..? Not hardly.. Just the opposite, in fact.. It means I have done a lot of things to keep from being attacked or victimized in some way.. The bad guys are the ones who are paranoid, as they should be..!

If I were to chose to get a concealed carry permit, Wyoming is a 'must issue' state, but state law Recognizes my God-given right, and allows either open or concealed carry Without a permit, as well..

Handguns have pretty much always been a big part of my life, ever sinces I was probably 16yrs old. I handgun hunted a lot when I was younger, then I competed in lots of shooting games with handguns when I got older.

I carry CCW when my guts tells me to, and I always sleep with 2 handguns within easy reach, plus a shotgun close by. Rifles are for hunting, and offense, shotguns are for hunting, and defense, pistols are my always guns, always fun, always handy, always available and ready, and they are much more useful then many would believe, if one can shoot straight.

However, these days, I don't hunt much on purpose with a handgun, and I don't often carry one in addition to a long gun, unless I am in pretty wild country, as I am lazy and don't like to pack any more then the min. , but I will often carry one when I don't have a long gun, handy. Actually, I would really hate to be without a few good handguns, ranging from tiny .380's to 44mags and several in between, unlike rifles where in a pinch I could get by just fine with only a couple, and the same with shotguns.

Buck, please don't think for one minute I was meaning anyone on here being paranoid.
I meant a few guys i worked with(to me seemed paranoid)
I remember taking a coffee break with one and I was saying to him the night before took the wife to a movie and I stopped these two guys from butting in front of us.(he said---"that wouldn't have went well with me cause I am always packing"
I said---dude you going to shoot a couple guys over that or even show your piece or elude to having one????
He said" If I need to"
You have to see where we live(I think the closest city to us was rated the 4th safest city in the US)
Most people in town I know by name!
I just feel weird packing going to the Malls around here(things could change though)???
You,where you live----just the thought of a mountain lion waiting by my car(might be enough for me to strap on daily)

As has been said here, yes handguns are very important to me as a means of expessing my right to defend my self and my family. That is why the American left and most of the world hate the fact that old Jerry Baird can own and carry a sixgun legally and does every day year in and year out. I am not paranoid, why should I be I carry a gun. I love my old rifles and my old 1922 LeFever 20ga.double, but I still carry a sixgun whether I drive into town to get some bread or buy gas. Do you just have auto insurance when you think you might have a wreck?

I've loved both short and longarms my whole life. When I got into law enforcement work the handgun became a tool that I couldn't do without anymore than a pen. For the last 24 years I've worn a handgun any time I'm awake, short of in the house. But, it's close by. Nate said it earlier that a handgun is used to get me to a rifle and that's how I look at it at work. I carry a Remington 870 w/extended mag tube and my AR15 carbine in my cruiser.

I agree that I would take a day in the woods over a day at the range. I pack a handgun when ever I'm in the woods, cutting wood, walking, etc. Most of my plinking during the year is with handguns. Guns are just a part of being outdoors ,no matter what I'm doing.

if I'm dressed, I'm armed 98% of the time - even at home. My "company gun", a Glock 23, is my almost constant companion.

I have a Concealed Handgun License, and it is important to me that I have the right. Whether I carry or not is not anyone's business. When in the woods where legal, I carry a Blackhawk in .45 Colt on my hip. I also carry the cylinder it has in .45ACP and feel that I have the right gun for almost anything I might bump into. Additionally, I started both kids into their love of shooting with .22lr handguns. Without handguns, that might not have happened.

Life is good with a Glock 27 & a S&W 638 (24/7 BUGs); plus the LE circles I hang with require a working knowledge and quarterly qualifications... :)
