Well, my wife won a German sewing machine at an auction.

I've been playing with the Google translator because all the controls on the machine are written in German.
The translator got most of them, but not all. Some were just kinda off a bit.

If we have any body here that speaks German and can translate this I'll post it.

That's what is written verbatim. With one exception, there should be two little dots above the a in Nahen. I don't know how to put them there.

Oh, this machine still has it's European electrical system right down to the 220 volt motor and double prong plug. Do you know where to buy an adaptor set up? I saw them years ago, but not recently.

If made for the German market -- which I would guess -- it will have a 50 Hz motor, instead of US standard 60 Hz, and may not run correctly on standard US house current...

Googles translator came pretty close, here's what it said:

Stopf. = Stuffing. This one actually had several translations. The correct one for this purpose was Darning.

On the bottom of the trap door for the cams:

Please close the middle

Stopf. = Stuffing Same alternate meaning as above is correct.
Seide = Silk
Norm. = Standard

On the inside of the pillar:

You are correct about the specs:
220 V 72 Watt
4500 U/min 50 Hz

I suspected when we looked at the pics and I saw a white plug that was obscured that it was for foreign power. But wifie wanted it.
So if we can't find a converter, she's gonna pay for a new motor and probably a foot controller. The foot controller is marked:
100 - 250 V with a symbol I think is AC/DC ( ~____ --- stacked on top of each other.) Not sure if the foot controller would work or not.

Awesome. My high school & college German was sooo long ago, and never exercised since my father-in-law passed. I got the easy ones, but that "stopf" and "Fuerth" stumped me!

I still have the bablefish.com in my bookmarks. The German above came directly off of the sewing machine, not a web site.

Babelfish will do Gernan to English, as well as English to other languages. I ain't an eletrician, but I don't think you can step your 110VAC supply up to run a 220VAC appliance. I think you'll have to replace the motor, the foot feed contoller might work, but... I'd get more'n my opinion...

You can get a 100 watt step up/step down transformer from Amazon for about $20 - I used them when I moved my electrical equipment from the UK to the US. Depending on how the motor is wound it may or may not work, but if it does rotate it will run 20% fast. The foot control is probably just a rheostat and should work ok.

In order to simplify things I called our local sewing machine guy and asked him if he'd maybe have something that would work on this machine. He said yes. So tomorrow it will become Americanized.

Oh, and I found it's country of origin. It's a Japanese casting, has the J- A symbol and it's got a decal saying it was made in the Republic of Ireland.

Well, this one is cast iron, so it's very heavy. I figure with a pound of black powder you could send it right along .......

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier but I work a 2nd job and got home at 9:30 and am just now checking in with leverguns.

Nähen means "sew" in German NOT "near". Near in German is "Nähe".....there is no "n" at the end. I know it's only one letter but it's a completely different world!

Quell does translate to spring or source but it the actual name of an actual mail order company. In the old days it was that alone, nowadays it's a large department store as well and can be found in most bigger German cities. You can, however, still order things from the catalog.

BTW: In your post it should read: Wer hier spricht Deutsch? or Wer spricht hier Deutsch? or Wer spricht Deutsch hier? If you want to use "sprechen" you have to say Wer kann hier Deutsch sprechen? What you wrote is gramatically wrong but is definitely understandable.

Sorry... My conversational German is a bit rusty...

"Bitte beim nähen schließen" translates idiomatically as "Please close (or keep closed) while sewing."

The opening question should properly have been, "Spricht hier jemand Deutsch?"

I went to the Google translator and typed in: Any one here speak German? The title to this thread is what came out.

If it's wrong, blame Google. It did the job though.
