Need some help with 1911'ish home decor research

Post by J Miller »

I have a 1911'ish vintage Franklin treadle machine that sits in a complete wooden cabinet. The top opens, hinged at the left, like a Singer and pulls the machine head up via a chain gizmo.
The treadle foot pedal is accessible after you open the front door. It's a really neat idea. When it's closed up it takes less space than a regular treadle base.

Right now the cabinet is sitting upside down in the front room because the bottom had gotten wet and all the glue died. It fell apart as we brought it home. I'm going to repair the bottom then turn it right side up pretty much where it sits.
The machine itself is already cleaned, lubed and test run on my Singer treadle base. Works good.

Now, once I get the cabinet repaired and everything back together I'll be wanting to make a cover for it.
We have cats and they are always on the furniture so we need a cover to keep them from damaging the wood.

I'd like to design something that would be period correct for 1911. But it's got to be simple enough to make on a treadle machine with no reverse.

Where do I look for ideas and or patterns? And what material and prints would be right as well?

Joe

And yes pics will be forthcoming when it's fixed.

Gotta admit, the 1911 Colt Govt was my first thought as well...

The year 1911 was good year. But in this case I'm thinking home decor, not combat handguns.

You mean you don't have a couple of 1911s placed on shelves, etc as "decor" like the rest of us?

Not any more. At one time I did when things were better. Then finances went to hades and I had to sell things to pay bills. I've never been able to replace them. Got any you wanna share?

Talk to an old aircraft mechanic and ask him we used to have to take a sewing test on things like that to get a A&P license.

Boy this thread sure wandered around didn't it :?:

Here is a pic of Mrs. Franklin. That's what I named her. And the cabinet she's in. I want a period type design for a cover to put over the cabinet.
