Winchester '92 red dot

Post by D-Ric902 »

Gents;
Hello, I'm new to lever guns. Been a handgun shooter for years but never shot much of anything but an AR.
I have a Marlin in 45/70 that I like shooting and I just picked up a Winchester 1892 saddle ring carbine in 357 Mag.
I love shooting this gun, it is a blast and very accurate with 158 grn SWC and 16 grains of 2400.

But it is screaming for a red dot.

I'm getting old enough to have trouble with the buckhorn and bead, I have red dot sights on the Marlin and a couple of AR type rifles (22 and 5.56)
Who makes a good weaver type rail or forward mount for this. Seen lots of stuff for the Winchester 94 but I would like to do it without drilling and tapping the reciever but the rear sight dovetail is probably not going to be enough.
Does anybody have a scout scope on this rifle and If I need to get the reciever drilled and tapped for the rail, Is there a good lever smith in Indiana or who do you recommend.
Thanks in advance

Yeah, you might get reprimanded for that. My Dad put one on his '94 carbine. It worked well. He was quick on the draw. When he died, I took it off and tossed it away.

Image and Welcome to THE Forum.

I can't really answer your question. Is your '92 an actual Winchester, or a clone? Have you tried a tang or receiver peep? I'm something of a traditionalist; and most shooting venues for leverguns allow peep sights in their "iron" definition and get rather specific on glass. You might just be surprised on how well a tang sight can help "aging" eyes!

Hey Welcome aboard.... Sounds like ya got a good couple levers. Now ya need a 22, 30/30, 45colt and well you know where this is going. :D Burris has a dovetail mount for their Fastfire red dot. May want to look at that.. Todd aka 3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

The Burris is something I didn't think about.
This is a Japan made new Winchester so I don't feel bad about changing it :)

This is the first Japanese made that I've seen but the bluing is well done and the trigger is pretty sweet for an off the rack rifle.

For the Fastfire, Burris makes a sight body blank that can be machined to fit the dovetail.

You could also consider a lighted reticle scope like the Burris Xtreme Tactical 1x-4x. This reticle is designed for .223 but nothing says you can't put one on your gun, and sight it for your caliber. Leupold also makes a similar 1-4x scope with a lighted reticle.

If your budget could allow it, a trijicon accupoint 3-9 might also be a good option

You add a lever rail by XS systems that will allow weaver rings to hold a red dot on your lever.

Howdy and welcome.

It's do-able but I don't know of any drop-in parts.

Part of the problem is if you mount a rail on the barrel the scope/red dot ends up too high for a decent cheek weld.

Welcome to the forum. Nice looking '92. Can't answer your question though. My thought is like Griff said, look at the tang sights. They're traditional and work great.

Here's a link for Turnbull's mounts for a Burris Fastfire for The Winchester 71,86, and 94 that are drilled and tapped for receiver sights. Shouldn't be to hard to have one made for a 92.

I mentioned using a weaver rail. Nate Kiowa Jones showed I was wrong in a quite appropriate manner. :o :o

At least it was a pro and not a troll!!!
