OT My son shot his first deer.

Post by BenT »

Wisconsin has a youth deer hunt weekend to promote youth hunting. They also started letting kids as young as 10 years old hunt with a mentor. Mentor allows only one gun and the adult must be at arms length away.

My son is 11 and the youth hunt was this last weekend. We set up a blind on the backside of the hill that is behind the house. It overlooks a small field. I decided that I would wait for shooting light to walk to the blind which is about 300 yards from the house. We walk along the edge of the woods where it meets the field . Slowly walking as the field curves around to the backside of the hill. My son was using a Ruger compact in 223. The 30-30 seemed to be to front heavy for him to hit consistant. When we got close to the we noticed a deer standing in the middle of the field. It was about 6:55and I couldn't make out if it had antlers or not. My son dropped to his knees and said he couldn't tell , Then he cranked up the power on the scope and I said if its a buck shoot. Well he took a shot at about 85 yards and the deer jumped up and ran into the woods. We went back to the house to wait an half and hour to let it get lighter and bleed out . I asked him where he thought he shot it and he said right behind the shoulder. Well when we went back out the deer was laying ten feet into the woods and shot right where he said he shot it. After gutting it out I seen that he hit it right in the heart. I found the 55 gr sierra game king in the hide on the offside perfectly mushroomed and weighting 49.8 gr. What a great day.

Very nice. In an article in the Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine several years ago, there were 2 writers, each giving their side of why to use certain calibers to hunt with. The one with the portion which gave the pro's of using smaller cartridges said that he had guided clients who could shoot very well with a .223 since it recoiled so little and was very accurate. The other writer claimed that nothing less than a 7mm Rem. Mag. would do. Seems that your son proved the first author right.

Great job! The .223 is fairly capable as a deer round, some would claim the 30-30 is marginal. I think all of us here know the real truth. Unfortunately, Kansas has laws requiring the bullet to be larger than .22 in diameter.

Awesome. That kind of thing will 'set the tone' for much of his life, and outlook on things, whether he hunts or not. Really cool.
