Headspace issues?

Post by sven556 »

I fired my win 94 30-30 today and when I checked the cases I noticed that the primers were backing out. I was shooting Federal 170gr sp rn ammunition.

I don't have calipers to measure how far out they are getting, but it is easily noticeable by sight and feel. Is this something I need to worry about or just keep an eye on it?

Also, with the action closed I can look between the bolt and chamber and see light. Is this normal?

At about 50m I was able to shoot 2" three shot groups with the original open sights.

May be due to pressures being some what low. Not an uncommon condition. Seems to come up with the .30-30 from time to time. One can measure headspace by taking a piece of fresh brass and putting successive layers of scotch tape across the headstamp and trimming the tape flush with the rim. Insert the treated case in to the chamber and close the action. Repeat this process until the bolt closes with resistence. Remove the layers of tape and measure with a micrometer. This will give you a good idea of your rifle's headspce. 1886.
