Sad day in Montana

Post by Bullard4075 »

This morning our Golden Retriever of 11 years "Missy" died with her head in my lap. Luckily her and I was alone sparing the family a gut-wrenching time.
I find I'm not as stoic as I was in my younger years. A failing perhaps.

:( It speaks well of you to have stayed with your friend in her time of need....She went feeling loved. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

I went through the exact same thing last year with my Lab. Died in the middle of the night with me holding him. It's a sad time when our companions pass. Not being stoic all the time just means you're human and you have feelings. My condolences to you.

Sorry for your loss. I'm felt that pain several times for some fine dogs. It's never easy.

Here's an oldie but a goodie by Karla Bonoff. She wrote it when she lost her four legged critter.

I have made the same observation about myself as i have grown older --- it doesn't make me "softer" or anything (maybe it does, i dont care) - but the loss of a pet really upsets my applecart now

I, too, don't think it a failing - but compassion for a faithful companion.

Like you, I've always insulated my family from family animal deaths - "out of sight, out of mind", if you willl.

Very sorry to hear about your dog.
It's been a year and a half since I lost my lab and now my boxer mix is having kidney problems and it won't be long. I get upset just thinking about it.

Been there done that. Sorry for you. I've had hounds and house dogs. Even after years I still choke when I think back. Time will help. A Montana boy.

yup, sad indeed. It's tough to let a friend go.
I went thru the same thing several years ago, on New Years eve no less. Swore I'd never do that again but by June there was a new puppy in the house. The darn thing was just too cute to pass up.

Very sorry to hear about your Dog. I spend virtually 24 hrs of every day with my little birddog--and my life, already good, is enriched because of him. It's too bad that they tend to have such brief lives. Cherish your memories; time will soften the pain.

No, not a failing at all.

The wife and I were both with the last two dogs (family members) we lost. We both cried. Not ashamed about it at all and it was certainly not a failing. Both of those dogs are buried right on our property as are other animals we have lost.

I always have a difficult time contributing to these posts. At 57 I have had a lot of good dogs and cats pass through my life. We lost our 12+ year old Chocolate Lab (Ruby the Red Dog) earlier this summer. I still feel bad that I was not home to be with her when she passed.

Be thankful that you could be there with your companion at the end.

Sorry to hear. I blubbered like a baby two years ago when I had my"Buck" put down at the vet(cancer) . He was a Shar-Pei with us for 13 years. I wrapped him up in a blanket and he had one last ride home in the truck. I buried him under his apple tree, next to the fire pit.
"Pete" is the new boy and colored very similar, although he is a Pit. Sometimes still I call him " Buck" and don't even realize it, until the wife says something.

First, my condolences for your loss.

Now, to the quote... I think as we age we #1, care less of what others might think and #2, care more about others in our lives and #3, better know the value of others in our lives. I'm also more sentimental than I once was! It is good that you were there with her. I hope I'm with my dog, Bailey, just as I was with both my parents.
Sincerely,

Hobie
