Lookin at getting a .45LC or a .44mag Rossi Lever

Post by sharps1863 »

Been lookin at getting another Rossi lever, I have a .357 rifle/pistol combo, but want a bigger caliber.
Don't own either caliber in a revolver. I know it will be the Trapper version. Done decided that. Main uses will be house/truck gun and Dense brush deer hunting. Less than 75yrds. So any thoughts.

You might be better off picking your revolver first, then buying the matching caliber carbine.

Both are very versatile rounds. I have actually had better results with my .45 Colt that with .44 mag. Bigger hole by about 10%.

Not enough difference in the two (in modern guns) to debate. If you choose and older gun or clone of certain guns, then the .44 mag will stand out.

As long as you buy a new one either cal will work for you. Through the mid 2000's Rossi had a run of 44mag's with over-size bore. They didn't shoot too well. The new 44mag have correct bores and will have more commercial ammo available but if you are a hand loader the 45lc can be made as powerful as the 44mags.

Check http://www.budsgunshop.com before you buy elsewhere - just to check the prices...

If you don't handload, then 44 Mag all the way. If you do, then either will work well for you.

And the companion revolver... I always vote Ruger Blackhawk - they have all kinds of configurations to suit you and there's all kinds of holsters available as well. Not to mention they're built like a bank vault.

See what you want revolver-wise first, because choice could be limited.

For instance, I really LIKE the Ruger Redhawks, and about a 6-1/2" barrel. Found a used one in .45 Colt a few years back, but otherwise I'd have been limited to .44 Mag. If I were more thinking a Ruger Blackhawk, then either is easy to find these days.

In a harder-kicking cartridge like the .44/.45 revolver rounds, consider a Bisley style grip; the Blackhawk .357 I have is a piece of cake to shoot 'hot' .357 Mag loads in, even with the relatively scrawny (vs. my long-fingered hands) grips, but I really dislike shooting the seemingly-lighter-weight (bigger holes in barrel and cylinder?) .44 Mag Blackhawks unless they have Bisley grips.

Anyway, once you have the six-gun, just get whichever carbine goes with it.

P.S. . . . you know you'll probably wind up with BOTH eventually, don't you. . . ?

I have a M92 in .480 with a companion SRH in .480 and agree that you should get the pistol first. I also own a .45 Colt and a .44 Mag revolver. I like all 3 calibers and would be willind to have a levergun and the pistol combo in any of them.
