OT: Lost my little buddy today

Killer 1998-2011

He was my first cat, a Bobtail Manx. It's been harder and harder for him to get up and move around the past 6-8 months and this morning the vet confirmed arthritis in his shoulders, elbows and hips. She said there are meds for it but they aren't near as effective as the ones for dogs and I saw no need for him to suffer anymore. To do so would have been selfish on my part.

When the shelter got him, he was 2-3 months old and weighed less than a pound due to malnutrition. They weren't even sure he'd make it through the night but he was a fighter. I picked him because he was ornery and gave him the only name suitable for him, Killer.

Not only was he the Alpha of our cats, he was also the peacemaker and comforter. He broke up the occasional spat between the others and would comfort any that got into trouble for some reason. If one of the others acted or sounded like they were in trouble or hurt, he was first on the spot to make sure all was well.

Some say our pets have no souls but the way I figure it, anything that loves us as unconditionally as our pets do has got to have a soul and I'll see him again...

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how it feels to loose one like that.
You will see him again at the Rainbow Bridge. Hang in there. Grieve well for him and enjoy the memories of the good times.

Sorry to hear that Andrew. :( We lost our Lance last year and it still hurts to think about it and I miss his little butt.

He was the younger of our two Welsh terriers and the older one is now approaching 14. She's doing OK but has serveral health problems that are catching up to her and I fear she'll be leaving us in the next year as well. :(

Thanks guys, I'm breathing a little better now. I've known it was coming but that doesn't make it any easier.

Andrew: Sounds like you have other cats, which is a blessing. We have three dogs, and if one goes, thank the Heavenly Father there will be another to hug through the loss.

It's always hard when we loose one of life's companions, words always seem to fail, but we always seem compelled to say something in an act of commiseration. While your loss can not be vanquished by our expressions of sorrow; I hope you will see that reflect the losses we may have had of our own and we do feel you and hope that your thoughts of Killer will be happy ones. I truly believe, with all my heart, that Heaven could not be such if we could not meet up again with those who brought such joy to our lives.

I'm sorry for your loss. After my tom died 10 years ago I swore I'd never have another pet. The loss was just too much, and their lifespans - cats or dogs - are just too short. However, when the kids got old enough to ask for pets, I just couldn't deny them the joy of growing up with a dog and cat. I am sure it will make them better people as adults.

You did the right thing, as hard as it was, to end a true friend's and loyal companion's suffering. Many people just don't have the courage for that selfless act.

I agree with you 100% on pets. I'm not sure they have a soul per se, but I can't imagine heaven without them.

That is awful! Truly awful!

I share my life with three cats (Chuy, Beamer and Murphy) and one Pekingese dog (Whitman). They are family to me and loosing one would be a hard blow.

Bless you for caring for one of God's own creatures. So many are abused that it does my heart good to know that one was loved and cared for.

Very sorry for your loss. It's hard, but you did the right thing. Cats can be very loyal buddies and are a special sort of pet.

Never easy.

They become part of the family.
