92 Winchester from 1912

Post by redlevel42 »

A member of my church died earlier this year. His widow asked me to help her dispose of his gun collection. She had 25 or so guns, mostly older military rifles, most of them in pretty bad shape from neglect. There were one or two real jewels, though, including this old Winchester. I had no idea of the real value of the gun, but I did a little research and came up with a figure. I wound up selling it to a local pharmacist for $1100. I figure he got a pretty good buy, I didn't have to spend time and money on phone calls, shipping, or meeting out of town buyers, and the widow got 11 crisp, new one-hundred-dollar bills. It was 25-20 caliber. I understand that is one of the least common calibers, but isn't necessarily in any greater demand. The gun was slick and in wonderful operating condition. I wouldn't have been afraid to take it hunting. The gouge in the forearm happened when the son-in-law and brother were sorting the guns before I got involved. It isn't really as bad as it looks in the picture.

Redlevel,

Any chance you happen to recall the serial number of the rifle? I am working on a research survey and would like to add the gun into the work. Based on the style of the upper tang stamp it is beyond SN #505000. You can read about what I am doing in these two forum posts. I now have over 2250 rifles cataloged. I truly appreciate any help that you or the pharmacist would be willing to make.

He got a bit of a deal but didn't steal it either.
