Modify a Smith Long Range Ladder Sight

Post by rbertalotto »

Here a little project I undertook this afternoon.

I ordered a Smith Long Range Ladder Sight from Brownells and upon receipt I realized it has no elevation adjustment..........

It does now!

Hi Roy, all but two pictures in your artical are not showing up?
Love your artical on the 92 take down. I have the old NRA gunsmithing book that you spoke of and have wanted to do the conversion also. Is the forearm held in place with two pan head screws going threw the two holes in your take down plate? are they threaded so you can slightly back them out if you will ever need to snug up the fit between the plate and receiver?

There was a problem.......It's working now

Yes, the two screws are threaded into the forend and they could have small washers placed under them to tighten up the system for wear. But the fact of the matter is, this gun will be "Taken Down" maybe twice a year (After I take it apart 100 times to show friends... ) Wear shouldn't be an issue.

I have 6 of those sights, and 4 are currently mounted on both Marlins and Winchester/Uberti copies and on some of them I had the same problem but with my limited gunsmithing/machinist skills I found it easier to just change front sights. Am
i missing something?

I have the lowest sight possible on my custom Marlin 1885. No way I could lower the front sight more. I had to raise the rear.
It would be very easy for Smith to build this sight with elevation adjustment.

How are other folks using this sight?

RB, I only have one sight like the one you have and its not on anything right now. The other five are all full buckhorn. How did that shim affect the tension on the ladder portion?

The shim had no effect on the ladder. It "clicks" into the upright position just like it would if it was resting on the barrel. The ladder "rung" moves up and down as before. No issues.

That is cool...!

It reminds me of what I've been putting off (for lack of machine-skills) but think would make a nice sight. The speed of a Marble's Bullseye sight with the precision adjustment of the Williams base. It would require a tall front sight, but, I'd like to put one of THESE 'apertures'...

...in place of the sliding aperture mount base...
Image

...on the Williams FP...

...or even on a 5D, with a bit less 'windage' friendliness...

Image
Image

Even modifying it to mount to the slanted WGRS base...

Image

...would be better than the 'driftable dovetail' mount used on the ordinary "Bullseye" model...

Ever hear of or see (or do) such a thing...?

I've been all around the web looking for a ladder sight for my .444. Here's some of the best, easy to understand information I've found, and its right here on one of my favorite forums. :D :D
