Great evening at silhouette

Post by jnyork »

Perfect afternoon for silhouette, just a little breeze to help keep down the heat, 85 degrees or so. Our Wednesday night group all did well, for a change. We all shoot cast only, two friends broke 30x40 with their .30-30's, both Marlin 336A's. I finally got out of my horrible slump, shot 36x40 with Marlin 1894CL, .32-20, best score I have ever shot with that gun and just had to brag a little. :D I would have shot .30-30 also but the full size pig swinger suffered a broken hanger bracket and wound up on the ground so gave it up as a bad job. Anyway, a good time was had by all, looking forward to next week. PS, with one exception we are all over 70.

What does 36x40 mean?

Silhouette is shot at steel targets, 10 chickens, 10 pigs, 10 turkeys and 10 rams. You score a 1 for any you knock down and a 0 for any you don't. jnyork knocked down 36 and only left 4 standing, which is a fine effort and a master class score.
Scores are B, A, AA, AAA, and Master
My best score to date is 24, but I have been shooting about 16-17 on average, which is only A grade, but I'm only new to the game and hope to improve.

Hmmm, 36x40 is the best my 1894CL would do too. :D I guess this proves it IS an equipment game and not a shooter game. :D

Great shooting Jerry!

Good job, York. That's a fine score and I'd be proud of it too. And, I'm not over 70.

I'm going to shoot my first smallbore silhouette match on the 7th. Started the all important talking of smack at the shop this morning. The truth is I don't know if I'll be able to see the red rams in the shade in which they are set on this range.

Hobie,

If you are shooting open sights those little 1/5 targets will be hard to see. I did it once with my lever gun. It is a challenge! The post or bead will blot out the target completely so you will have to use a 6:00 hold. In my case I was sighted in for the Smallbore Cowboy targets (1/2 size) so I was holding on their feet.

Hobie, is that "Small Bore Lever Action" or "Smallbore Rifle"? If it's smallbore rifle, it's fired with scopes, should be able to see any target out there.

Smallbore rifle (scoped) AND pistol (open sight). Couldn't see the red rams (they've got them painted a dark red) in the shade two weeks ago (the 17th) and doubt much will change as the match will be fired the same time of day. BUT it should be fun! I'll be using a Contender for the rifle match, this time. I'll get the Marlin Mountie zeroed with the correct ammo and use it with peep sights the match after that.
Sincerely,

Hobie
