OT - Don't try this at home

Post by perry owens »

It appears that Yorkshire Bitter does not make a good anaesthetic.

Our UK members might be surprised at the very light sentance imposed but this guy is what we call a "traveller" - a polite name for itinerent benefit scroungers who seem to enjoy a different legal system to the rest of us.

That's also a pathetic reflection of the legal system (15 years for 'gun possession') and health care system (we'd treat the wart in our office for less than the average trip to a pub costs).

Still pretty funny (in a sort of sick, pathetic way  ) though...!

Not much to say except I guess the wart really bothered him.

Mr. Owens,
The americans could use a better explanation of " traveler ".
Before my gig in England I had no idea such a thing existed or could exist.

I was under the impression than another word for a "traveler" was a gypsy.

A popular definition of "traveller" is someone who opts out of paying anything into the system but maximises opportunities for taking things out. They pay no income, social security or property tax or insurance but take full advantage of the free healthcare and education available. Our government also requires local communities to supply and maintain sites where travellers can park their shiny caravans and Range Rovers while engaging in traditional traveller occupations. These include tricking vulnerable old folk out of huge amounts of money for roofing and yard work they don't need, stealing copper cabling from railway systems and snipping off catalytic convertors from under cars. When caught the charges are often not pursued because the police know they will just abscond before trial date.
Of course, this is a very sweeping generalization and there are probably very many good, law abiding travellers around the UK. I am unlucky in that I have only ever met the nasty ones.

Travellers are an Irish minority group, even in Ireland. They were sometimes called "Tinkers".

We have "travelers" here in the U.S. as well. They are associated, generally speaking, with less than laudatory business practices (at best) or outright criminal activity.
