OT: Marlin Owners Forum

Post by J Miller »

I was invited to join Marlin Owners forum by a Leverguns member who has left us. He's told me why he left, but I don't have his permission to post his name or reasons so he shall go unidentified.

I registered, logged in and have been spending some time the last couple days reading and poking around in the M.O. forum. There is a lot of sections there to dig through and it takes some time.

About the only thing I've learned so far is one member used to work at Marlin and what he's telling about the Remington buy out and the things that were not done when the Marlin machinery was hauled away is appalling.
Based on his comments and those of the owners of the Remington made Marlins I'm going on record as believing that Marlin is as DEAD as Winchester. Both product names are being made by outsiders and their products are but shoddy facsimiles of the real thing.

As for the forum, I've yet to find any post I can contribute to. Lots of reading, but nothing to really get involved in. At least not yet.

Am I just being dense or have others felt this same way there?
Not knocking the forum, just asking cos there have been others I've joined and jumped right into.

A kindly gentleman like yourself will probably be able to pass on an immense amount of knowledge to a multitude of beginning levergunners over there.

Some good folks but they are much too PC for my tastes, and I don't care to learn how to curtsey.

I was a plank owner over there when the Marlin-sponsored Marlin Talk folded. It was good for awhile, then evil forces took over. My line in the sand was a private, members only .444 "club" that one had to ask to join. They had a private sweepstakes to give away a rifle. The current owner is a liar and drunk. I was booted a couple times, and I have no intention of "asking" to go back. It's been said I don't work and play well with others, but, IMO, only when provoked.

Blaine,

So that "is" the forum I'd heard that about. OK, then fore warned is fore armed. I'll just play it quiet and if I see something worth while I'll say something.

I check in on the MO forum occasionally. I only check out the section for "OTHER MARLINS". I have a Marlin Camp 9, and have gleaned a lot of info for that rifle from there.

I was poking around in that one too. I found that at least 3 others have MR-7's.

Now THERE'S an image I need to purge from my mind...

There IS alot of good information over there, BUT I dislike the overly-fragmented forum layout - having a separate section for each model, caliber, or whatever just seems silly - if you want to just read posts on certain topics, that's what the "search" function is for!

This forum has alot more interesting 'diversions' and posts on related-but-not-necessarily-levergun topics.

Perhaps because of their fragmented forum structure, there also seems to be less posting and new activity there. Probably because the "1894" people never stumble across a "45-70" post to stimulate new interest or discussion, and vice versa. Interesting to note about the 444 Marlin "club" though - I hadn't noticed that one. :?

I mainly read posts over, at MO. I post/respond every once in a while when someone is totally whistling out of their tailside concerning facts, but I really don't feel like I fit into their "clique" any more. Just check out the "rimfire" section and you'll understand.

Remember guys, I'm on dial up. It takes this box 10-15 minutes to download a 30 second video. So unless it's really important or interesting I don't bother.

IMHO, there is much info on both forums. I frequent both and own Marlin, Winchester, Ruger, etc., etc. I don't claim to know it all, always looking to the experts and then making up my own mind based on the information I've been able to gather.

Just my thoughts!

I have visited there but never registered.
I prefer this forum due to its inherent exclusivity - aparently due to the high grade of people here.
For a few years, I felt that I was being kept out for something someone knew that I had done or said sometime in my life.
Sorry, Hobie.
Hobie finally let me in and it seems it was simply a matter of the process necessary to keep out spammers.

Kidding aside, I like the folks here so I don't wander far or often.
Do a lot of reading (lurking) elsewhere, but don't jump in just everywhere.

EDIT:
I spelled Hobie's name wrong.
I'll get the boot yet.

Just a word to the wise. Don't talk bad about other forums any where any time unless you want to risk being booted. Many times forum owners or mods search to see what's being said.

I think I should let you guys know that I've been asked to discipline posters here about comments made about MO. In fairness, that is not the only such request I've had although those were from purported members of other forums. I know that some forums don't even permit links to other "rival" forums.

We don't have rival forums. We do our level best to follow the "rule", i.e. "This is a high-class place so act respectable. We discuss most anything here other than politics... politely," without playing favorites. Sometimes people think we haven't been fair. You can bet that if you make a complaint we conscientiously review it and even our own behavior. You can say anything about any other forum AND this one if you follow the rule. NOBODY (I think it is 6 or 7 since 2005) has been banned for criticizing the forum or me personally.

That said, I've been "banned" from MO. I had no idea why. When I mentioned this I suddenly started getting e-mail from that forum. I found that interesting. I'm on about every English language firearms forum I know of and a few that are other than English language. I made up my mind a long time ago to register and preserve my "good" name by keeping the "Hobie" moniker for myself. If "Hobie" is taken then I am "TheRealHobie". On many of these forums I post "infrequently" but I do look for interesting stuff. I see a number of people on those forums who are members here so I feel I've gotten to know a lot of you. You can bet that the other forum admin people and moderators are doing the same thing. Some of them ARE on a power kick. That's sad. There's a heck of a lot of life experience out there!
Sincerely,

Hobie

I can like about any board as long as i`m treated with respect and there aren`t a bunch of flamers, that and ya go to the trouble to post and nobody replies then i`m out of there as far as getting involved with people.
Otherwise there is a lot of info to be picked up by just being a guest. :)

Well, I didn't link to 'em but I asked questions about my observations of what I found there. I wouldn't be surprised if they ban me before the second post.
Oh well, I don't take kind to outright censorship so I'll play nice but I won't kiss the parts they sit on.

As for the name thing I've registered on a very many forums as J Miller, JMiller, or J Miller45. But I've gotten to the point that I spend too much time on this box as it is so I spend most of it here. My post count should show that

I tend to prefer forums that more realistically match my personal interests. Leverguns are only one of the types of guns that I enjoy and I’d sure hate to be locked into being “only” a Marlin fan (or any one brand for that matter).

Any forum that starts to get too “full of itself” generally has moderators who are on some kind of power trip. Those “important types” usually succeed (mostly) in running off the people who made up the bulk of the knowledge base – after which, the forum founders, lists, then is sold off or goes under.

That said, I am a member of the Marlin forum, but it’s just a bit too one-dimensional for me. As such, I rarely ever login over there since why should I log in for 10 minutes a year?

Not alot of new info over there lately, so I don't visit much. But I did learn about Ranchdog moulds and skinner sights. When I bought my 338MX I visted alot more often and shared reloading info. To many sub forums and it isn't the same as this sight. I learn more on this site by accident then over there on purpose.

I have been a member there for the past few years and have never had any issues whatsoever. I do like the fact that there are a number of different categories which certainly helps narrow the choices when one is searching for information.

Awile back, I had suggested that they add a NRA COWBOY SILHOUETTE category due to its increasing popularity and they did. :D

In fact, I have met one of the owners on 3 different occasions at levergun matches and he appears to be one that you could "ride the river with". :D

As I'm a gun "ho", I'm a member of at least a dozen boards. Most are great some not so much but I avoid the "know it alls" and "arrogant types" like the plague.

One brand specific board went from pretty good to lame soon as the owner decided he'd have two "levels" one for paid members and one for everyone else.... Guess he decided he needed to try and make a living running a gun board. I won't pay to use a forum so I only lurk in the "low life" areas of that one once in awhile. Although I will go out of my way to use the sponsors of boards that I really like and feel that the guy(s) running it are actually doing it for the cause and not simply to enrich themselves.

This is one of the better boards for one simple reason and that is that the members are civil and don't try to force their opinions or views down anyones throat.

I don't find many "mall ninjas" or "internet commandos" here and that's refreshing..

Thanks for making this a nice joint to pull up a seat at.

One of my first posts over there was about the Marlin 375... some guy was asking about his as the serial # showed it to be a 1976 production receiver... they were all on about they weren't made till 1980 and it had to be a conversion. I jumped in with pics of mine, (1978 production receiver) and how I bought it in early 1980, new in box, with papers and box marked with serial number and Model 375. Unfortunately, I didn't buy it as a collector and the box and papers have long since disappeared... Didn't exactly dispute my claim, but I got the impression that they were happy with their assumption. http://www.marlinowners.com/forums/inde ... 509.0.html

I'm a member of MO, and I've had to defend against complaints about the actions of leverguns mods. I lurk on several but MO and Leverguns are just about the only places on the web I post about gun stuff.

So far the mods at both forums seem to fairly treat me. I might initially change my opinion if I were to get banned at either place. But, I'd lurk even if I couldn't post.

MO is usually a rather slow moving forum like some others. You can log in after a couple weeks absence and pick right up where you left off.
Here if you miss a day, you have to read and read to catch up. Or your post of interest may be two pages down.

I have to agree with many others. The powers that be such as VTDW have run off many good members for nothing but there own swelled heads.

I myself joined these other booted good members when I was removed for removing my own posts lol. Oh and put a frown face lol. Yep that is it no arguing with anyone or anything else.

What was funny is that I even contributed to the site as much as I could. Mainly on the Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag and some of the Marlin 1895GS in 45-70. Along with a XL-7 build to a 35 Whelen by Dangerous Dan with how to pictures and all. Sad they will miss the Stevens 200 build into a 358 Winchester with a Boyds thumb hole stock.

To put it simply, I never had a problem with either forum.
If I post an opinion, it’s usually from my personal experience with a firearm I have or how I come to choose that particular firearm or cartridge.

I have to agree with 444Hal. I go to both boards and haven't had much problem at either place. Been on Leverguns since the late '90's sometime and Marlin for just a year or two. But I try to never get into scuffles either place.

I am polite, expect the same and haven't had any problems either place.

Acording to another forum , the above mentioned has sold it off to new owners . Some hiccups in getting the servers secure and up to speed have been mentioned . Hopefully the new owners will get things back on a reasonable track.

EDIT :
OOOPS !!! I never noticed the date on the post I was refering to , it was an old thread recently brought back . My apologies for posting without double checking .

That explains why controversial topics about Marlin along with Remington and so forth under there new ownership were taken away from public view so that only members could read them. Try to not rock the boat.

Well if you did like MO before it will now be a whole new world and not for the good as I have seen it many times. But one never knows for sure.

The forum HAS not been sold, what a rumor mill the internet can be. With a couple of exceptions, to my knowledge, the guys banned from there would get banned from here if they acted & reacted the same here as there. I think the fact that this one is fairly small & therefore more personal than MO helps keep people moderating themselves to a large degree. Course it could just be that MO serves to satiate the need to rant that some folks seem to harbor.

At any rate it'll be back when its back & as far as I know VTDW & Gun Junkie will still be the bosses.

I was on the old Marlin Talk when it was owned by Marlin. After that was shut down I joined MO and have been there for more years than I can recall. I don't get to most the various topics, as my main interests are collectable Marlins, so the "Collectors" forum is about all I visit. I've looked in on some others, but didn't see much to interest me.
I do like that it has all the separate topics so I don't have to struggle through tons of posts that are of no interest to me. I rarely go there anymore, but then I rarely look at any forums nowadays. Since I retired last fall I've just been way too busy having fun to spend much time at a computer.
I did get a message from someone at the MO forum stating they've been hacked and that it was so bad they're sending some kind of computer tech to sort out the issues. Told it might take a couple days to fix, but I wouldn't have even known if it had not been an email alert.

Somehow missed this topic when it started. :?:

Anyway, I've been a member there and the old Marlin talk, I never had an issue with them, or even noticed a problem with any members, the crazy stuff must happen when I'm sleeping. :D

It's good here too, these are the only gun forums I visit anymore, I stop by, take a looksee, comment if I know what I'm talking about, and go home. Maybe that's why I stay out of trouble.

I have been a member of both sites for years. MO is a great place to find specific info especially about less common Marlin firearms. I have met some great and very knowledgeable people there. I have also bought and sold quite a few leverguns there. That being said, apparently the moderators don't take kindly to a member doing what they consider to be too much gun trading there. I guess I could understand their position if there was a member who only posted in the classifieds, but a member that posts regularly in the other forums as well? I don't get it.

+1. No complaints about MO or Leverguns. I like both forums and get a lot from both.
