Cast Bullets vs Milk Jugs

Post by Whit Spurzon »

A good friend of mine (Wind) collected a bunch of milk jugs and let me help him punch some holes in them.

I was most surprised by what a Lee 379-250 could do.

We also shot jugs with 45-70 in 350 and 500 grain bullets

Great vids! Interesting just how many of them a cast boolit going 1500 fps will penetrate...

Good stuff....many thanks for sharing that fellas. A 250 gr. 38 caliber cast bullet going 1500 fps, penetrating 18 milk jugs  .

Too bad you didn't have more jugs when you got to the .32-20 - maybe next time...

A ways back someone posted a .50 BMG test where it only went through about 1/3 as many as the .45-70, despite the pointy FMJ bullet and much higher velocity. Counterintuitive, to say the least.

Wonder what a 1500 FPS FMJ vs. a 1500 FPS Cast blunt-nose would do?

Whit,
That sure is fun. :D When my kids were small I used to shoot a milk jug with a 22-250 with a 53 gr. Sierra going 3600 at about 30 yards and say, "thats what happens to a person when they get hit with a bullet". Actions speak louder than words.

You ought to see what a .257 Weatherby loaded with a 87 gr. going 3500 does. :D -------Sixgun

Sixgun,

I used a cantaloupe with my son to impress the destructive power... Always been a safe kid. I have a mess of 2 liter soda bottles I've been saving to do something similar... but wanna build a rack where they'll be held in place along the sides. Similar to what you do with wet phone books.

Whit/Wind, good videos and very informative. Enjoyed.

I had a neighbor with a terminally ill (and writhing in pain) cat he wanted put down and he said he just wanted it instant and humane, and didn't want the body or anything like that, so I used a 12 gauge. Humane and instant to the poor cat - absolutely - but grisly and awful enough to forever impress my pre-school aged kids as to why you NEVER play with guns - for sure.

Whit,

Love those milk jug tests! Thank you for the link to your videos - great stuff.

In an experiment I did with the same type of jugs, I came up with this information:
"Since claims are most frequently made that 10% gelatin solution is pretty close to live target tissue, the following stats use that medium. To translate it back into distances that the same bullet would travel in water, you use the multiplier of 2 to 1, more or less. One source says that 2.25 is more accurate; and another source says that you should use 1.8 with stacked milk cartons because of the cardboard in between each segment (the milk container packaging material)."

( http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... 4&start=40 )

Those particular jugs showed me that a slug that penetrated in 10" of gelatin would penetrate 15" of water, or specifically 1.5x. That is, water pentration using that shape of a jug is 1.5x the penetration in gelatin (or roughly, flesh). See:
http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... 4&start=80

So... penetration through 5 plastic 6-inch milk jugs, capped, stacked sequentially without outside clamping pressure (as in your test) should be about equal to 2/3 that distance in gelatin, FYI. At least that was what happened with pistol bullets.

If the longer rifle bullets follow suit with those jugs, that gives you:
5 six-inch jugs = 30 inches;
Multiplier of .66667 [or, 2/3] * 30 inches = 20 inches
Your 5 jug water penetration should approximate 20 inches of gelatin media.
