New Marlin Cowboy
YEEEEHAWWWW
Got my new Cowboy 45-70, it was made in 2002 but new in box.
Smooth as butter and shoots great, now that`s how a new gun should be out of the box.
It really balances nice, i`m thrilled with it.

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
I pawwed over one of those just about '02 and decided Joey Likie and wants. Wallet crawled deeper into my pocket and said laughingly .... dream on duffas.
I still want one.
Congrats on the nice rifle. You know maybe a few rounds in the right direction will keep the local pests away .

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
Thanks gents, it is so light and sleek, it only weighs a little over seven lbs on my scale.
Doesn`t kick bad either with my handload of 405 flat nose over 45 grains of 3031.
I`ll have to get a picture of a group later.
Made by Marlin, JM stamped on the barrel.

Hey wait a minute, "JM" stamped on the barrel???? That's my gun, I had 'em custom engrave my initials on it ...Pitchy wrote:Thanks gents, it is so light and sleek, it only weighs a little over seven lbs on my scale.

Just kidding.
I wonder what proof marks the new Marlingtons will have?

I know you'll love it. They balance and shoot better than the shorter ones.....Mine would be the last 45-70 I got rid of.

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
Tanks again guys, Jim the new ones have a oval circle with Rem or somethin in it on the opposite side just in front of the receiver on the barrel.
You better find a old one, can`t beat having you stamp on it.

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
IS THIS ONE OF THE VERY EARLY ONES D&T'd FOR RECEIVER SIGHTS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ACTION ??? IF IT IS AND HAS THE BADGER BBL THEY PUT ON THE VERY EARLIEST RIFLES, IT IS WORTH JUST TWICE WHAT THE OTHER 336 COWBOY 45/70's ARE WORTH.

Nice! Very nice!Pitchy wrote:"...it was made in 2002 but new in box."
But I'll bet you could have made one in 2010 if you'd put your mind & tools to it!

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
I purchased a 1895CB in late 2001 !
Never shot anything but cast in it the whole time I owned it !
Was also the first gun I ever shot cast in !
Killed a very nice 6 point buck with it at exactly 21 yards using the Gould 330 grain HP bullet !
The reason I know it was 21 yards is because I was sitting about 20 feet up a tree when he wandered over my way and at the crack of the rifle he hit the ground !
Climbed down and stepped it off 21 yards exactly ! Seems to me I was using 31.5 grains of SR4759 and a CCI 200 primer with the Gould bullet !
This happened to be one of the 3 largest bodied deer I've ever taken !
Sadly to say when I was cleaning house two years ago this one went !

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
Pitchy, somewhere around I have data on loads I tested in a 22" Marlin, the Cowboy and Browning 1885 for comparison.

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
Thanks again everyone, Old Savage yep would like to see your loads.
I`ve been stuck on my 45 grains of 3031 over a cast 405 bullet for many years, shoot it in my Sharps, 86, now the Cowboy.
Plus it`s an easy to remember load.

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
Have it sighted about an inch high at 100 yards, first notch on the elevator so today i set it up one notch and shot at a plate size steel gong at 175 yards off hand.
Knocked that sucker right off it`s stand, dang that feels good.

Sweet! Congrats!
I have a Davidson's LTD 1/2 round/1/2 hexagonal 24" barrel. I really like it = a keeper that will stay in the collection and go to one of my kids some day.

Re: New Marlin Cowboy
What would be cool is if each notch up on the elevator would be a 100 yards, could be up to 300 but after that those 405s start dropping fast.
My Sharps rifle is 50 yards every mark up on the vernier until it gets to 350 then have to go two marks for 400.
