Ot-question for saa shooters
Im just curious what size groups you guys typically get with traditional sights at 50 yards. I can do around 2 inches at 25yards with my 45colt, but my groups go to heck at 50. Thanks

I found out just how much i shake when i put a laser sight on my 1911, the further away the more pronounced it is.

Re: Ot-question for saa shooters
My best average was (note the past tense) 4" at 50 yards with normal sights. This was from Keith's braced sitting position. Off hand .... well, no where near that good.
Now, I have no idea.

Re: Ot-question for saa shooters
Two inches seems pretty good to me but i imagine a person could adjust hand loads that would put them all in one hole at 25 yards.
My eyes won`t allow that kind of shooting any more and i`m happy if i can keep them all on a paper plate at 50 yards.

When I shot better Maybe 3 1/2" offhand at 50 yds with the best for 5 of 6 with my Model 24 - whether me or one cylinder there would usually be one that opened it up a bit.

I have been carrying and shooting my Colt SSA .45 since 1959 and at 72 I am now satisfied to hold 5 rounds "minute of chest". It will still shoot better than I can.

I shoot Colt SAAs of one caliber or another each time I go to the lease. That's about 3 times a week. 3 to 5 shots is usual. 2 inches at 25 yards off hand is about as good as I can do. At fifty if I keep the on a paper plate I feel fine. At 100 I'm happy to hit the plate at all.

+1 to RR7
I shoot a lot of SASS events but the range is short and the targets are big. Several time a year I help a friend with phase 4 qualifications for armed security guards. He and I usually shoot the qualification course with SAAs gunfighter style, (one in each hand). If either of us drops a shot out of the 5 zone, we are mortified! The longest range is 25 yards and is mostly shot around the barrier which I use to brace my wrist against.
I think you are getting very good groups. What caliber? Check the cylinder throats for bullet fit and size bullets to about .001 over groove diameter and have your forcing cone checked and re-cut to 11 degrees.
There other accuracy modifications that can be made, such as line boring a new cylinder using your frame and bolt as a jig to assure each chamber lines up perfectly with the barrel. Only a few pistolsmiths capable of doing this job correctly and the job is pricey. Provably cheaper to just buy a Freedom Arms in the first place.

Re: Ot-question for saa shooters
Mr. Wright, you bring up a point that I've been curious about. What size should the throats be relative to groove diameter. For example, if the groove diameter is .458, ideally what diameter should the throats be? Smaller? Larger?
