.45 Colt H&R Carbines for $229 at CDNN

Post by AR-Trvlr »

Just a FYI, CDNN has the H&R 'Classic Carbine' in .45 Colt for $229 if anyone else is interested. Looks like a pretty good price to me, so I ordered one this morning....

Hi All,

Yep....you could shoot roundball sneeze loads at soda cans or Linebaugh/Seyfried 345 gr WFN at cape buff with the same rifle. I tried to find one when they first came out, but they were about $150 more than a 30-06 at that time.

Wow. That's a big pressure difference! I suppose the gun design is up to it, since you can get the H&R's in some hot bottleneck rounds in the 60,000+ psi range, but I hope the metallurgy isn't different/lesser for the .45 Colt barrels, or that they're not like the Handi-Rifles in .357 Magnum that use the 'shotgun' frame and therefore aren't recommended to bore out to .357 Maximum.

I have a hard time getting by the strange way the stock meets the receiver on these rifles. I think the way the wood is hugely proud of the metal looks bad and feels even worse in the hand. Sure do like the price though!! There's a .38-55 in my local shop for about this price, but I just can't warm up to it.

Yes, that's always bothered me as well. Has anyone had any luck reshaping them? Would that make them too slim and prone to breaking?

Nope, not prone to breakage. They look great when fitted properly. A friend of mine has an old one that he built a stock for and it is to die for. He's doing the same for one of mine right now!

They are plenty strong enough to rechamber for either the .454 or the .460 Smith. Great little guns.

OK, here's a question. If some one wanted to put a peep sight on this rifle how could you do it?

Never owned one, so I have no idea.

Junior put a Guide Receiver sight on his Handi-rifle. Should work, might have to adjust the front sight height depending on bullet velocity as there's not a lot of elevation adjustment in those GRSs.

You have to download the CDNN catalog to see the guns.

they're shooters. I have the buffalo classic. It has a williams peep on the rear scope holes. they're competetive with hi-dollar guns at the long range matches.

you want the SB2 frame to be able to swap up barrels to high pressure loads.

if you can get past the looks, they're great guns. I have one in 20ga too. I think of 'em as my blue collar guns. they look good to me.

that .45 would be the bee's knees. whatever that means...

I have the standard Handi rifle in 45/70 with 22" barrel and the shorter "Trapper" version with 18-3/4' barrel. Both are very accurate and much fun to shoot/hunt with.In the past I have owned Handi rifles in .223,.243,30-30,.270,.44 magnum and the Buffalo classic in 45/70.
These rifles are the greatest value for the money available. They are accurate and very versatile.

Has anyone seen one of these converted to a .454 Casull or .460 S&W; or is that a "Theory".

seems like it would work, but just wondering.

does seem like a fun thing to purchase even if kept as a .45LC.

Joe,

Williams makes a peep that fits right on top of the chamber swell. There's also a guy named Skinner who makes a very nice peep for the H&Rs.

They're great little rifles. They don't have the lovely fit and finish of some, but they also don't have the price tag. Marlin makes the barrels now for H&R and they do pretty well.

They make a nice truck rifle too. The rifle is very flat and has nothing protruding on the side to catch on things.

For mine, I have .30-30, 225 Winchester (used to be a .223), .45 Colt, .38-55, and three lengths of .45-70. Also 410, 20 and 12 gauges. Also have a .58 muzzleloader. Kinda like 'em! :)
