OT - How do I ship a rifle to England?

Post by mod71alaska »

Neither FedEx nor UPS will ship a firearm internationally. Is it possible? What are the hoops? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Really only leaves USPS... Plenty of forms/declarations/import/export garbage and you better package/insure it like it were Fabergé Eggs, but I don't think they have a choice as long as all the paperwork is done properly on both ends.

You will need to dig around these:

I'm not sure about shipping rules but I'm pretty sure a firearm is supposed to be shipped to a firearms dealer and he has to make sure the firearm is legally proofed, which means before he can hand it over,(if it does not already have recognized proof marks), it will have to go through London or Birmingham proof house. I may be wrong on this as UK law is confusing to say the least.

I've sent them US Mail with the Customs forms attached. Upon arrival in the UK they are handled by the Royal Mail Service. I have always sent to Ladd's of Creddington care of Mike Ladd. He is an authorized firearms dealer there.

To get around dealing with all the paper work I have sent them through by import/export company up in Blaine Wa. I just let them handle everything for small fee of course.

When I shipped all my firearms back to the UK I used European Target Shooters Supplies (ETSS) in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Mike Nehs at ETSS handled all the paperwork and shipped by Fedex to their depot at Stansted Airport in the UK. I just went to the depot with my firearms licence and collected them.
If you are shipping to an individual he will have to have the details of the gun already entered on his firearm certificate by the police, ie make, model and serial number - he cannot enter them himself when he collects the gun. If the transaction is a sale he will have to pay import duty and value added tax, which will add about 27% to the sale price.
If you ship to a registered firearms dealer he will not be able to transfer the gun to the new owner without first submitting it to UK proof, as GK said.
