Introduced Y2K to the Holy Black today
Took Y2K to the range today to do the shooting for his science fair project. You'll remember that he received permission to do a project on ballistics. We loaded a bunch of .38 Specials with various charges of Unique to see how this impacted (pun intended) the impact points.
The gun chosen for the test is my Marlin 1894c (thus the lack of a "OT" in the subject line). The testing went well, though it didn't tell us much.
At the end of the formal testing, I decided to let Y2K try out two loads he's never fired before. I had loaded 5 rounds using 20 grains of Goex blackpowder under a 160-grain "Snakebite' bullet. These shot very well, with little fouling. Further, Y2K is now hooked on shooting blackpowder cartridges!!!
The other rounds were five .357 Magnum rounds - the first magnums he's fired. He liked these as well, but not as much as he liked the Holy Black's!

How was the accuracy of those Snakebites over Goex? I am thinking of getting a mould for them to use with BP in a .357 carbine for CAS.

You did it now. Now the next time you go looking for your CB pistols and can't find them check his room first. My boy love shooting BP I think it has to do with the added noise and smoke young boys (and grown men) love dramatic reactions when pulling a trigger.

Re: Introduced Y2K to the Holy Black today
I just loaded 5 of them before the session, and only shot the first one myself; Y2K shot the next 4. Then again, neither of us had any problems hitting the bullseye with all shots. I plan to load up a bunch of them over Christmas vacation - 100 or 200 at least!perry owens wrote:How was the accuracy of those Snakebites over Goex? Way to go Ysabel,
I started shooting black when I was about 14, let's see that's how many years ago? 57? Seems like yesterday but it's been great. Still shoot frontier cartridge in SASS. Hope it takes as well on Y2K.

BTW - 5 rounds of blackpowder cartridges in .38 special + indoor shooting range = smoke alarm going off!

A buddy and I did that once with a Stevens in 32-20 that he has. He had grabbed a bunch of BP reloads on accident. Guys that run indoor ranges don't find it very funny.

Re: Introduced Y2K to the Holy Black today
I was surprised. It was only 5 rounds, and they had a big fan mounted high on the rear wall to blow smoke, fumes, debris, etc. away into the range. It was blowing right over the smoke detector. Made the range cold as ice too - I could see my breadth the whole time! We stopped as soon as the alarm went off, expecting we'd get a visit from the employees, but it shut off and they never came, and we finished up after the 5 rounds of .357 Magnums.JReed wrote:Ysabel Kid wrote:BTW - 5 rounds of blackpowder cartridges in .38 special + indoor shooting range = smoke alarm going off!

Very good. I can't wait to see the results of his experiment. Your's sounded like it was both fun and successful!
