Son's first squirrel:)
Took the boy on his first squirrel hunt today. Went out with some friends whose family owns land down around Fairfield, TX. Got there around 1030 and started hunting. Aaron was shooting a H&R 28ga single shot. A couple of squirrels gave us the slip and I believe one was a ghost squirrel or he had 9 lives, not sure which one. Aaron finally connected and got his first squirrel. Good time was had by all and I really enjoyed the guy time with the boy.

Outstanding! Nothing finer than a kid hunting with a Dad. I'd say that boy shows some real promise!
Re: Son's first squirrel:)
Congratulations!
Kids today miss a lot of valuable experience by not becoming good squirrel hunters before they move on to other things. There is much to be learned in the squirrel woods that they'll spend a long time learning with out those early lessons.
It's like when Jr. was born, he was a preemie and as a result had a social worker come to call as he was growing up for the first 2 years. This person was a specialist in early childhood development. At one point we had to make sure he was crawling instead of just pulling himself and walking right away. She explained that there are early basic skills that a child learns while crawling that they'll miss if they don't do it.In fact in some children if they got up to the first and second grades and they find out they never did crawl they will actually get the kids down and have them crawl to try and establish those tools. Chasing tree rats is the same way IMHO.

Nice fox squirrel.. great way to start a boy out... when he can shoot a 22 rifle, that will help him get to be a rifleman, and you won't have to watch for lead shot in your squirrel pie w/biscuts.. makes me drool just to think about it.. Les

Awsome. My fondest memories of growing up where time spent in the woods with my Dad.
Re: Son's first squirrel:)
And how did the lad prepare his harvest? Roasted on a stick? Fried? In a stew?

Re: Son's first squirrel:)
Fried it up for him. I left for work and called home when the kids got home from school. Told my daughter to tell Aaron that the squirrel was sitting in the microwave and she said, "He already found it, he's already eating it". he must have followed his nose. Now if I can just find some other areas in North Texas to take him we'll keep going.
Thanks for all the responses, he looks forward to reading them.
