Blazer alum shells in a lever?

Post by Derailed »

I read somewhere that is isn't recommended. I have a couple boxes and would like to use them in my Rossi.
Can anybody confirm or deny?

I've read the same thing. The only thing I can say is I have fired a box of them through my Win 94AE Trapper in .45 Colt. They fed, fired, extracted and ejected just fine.
I can't say anything about other guns or calibers.

I've fired blazers out of my 1894 without a problem.

Don't know about the Rossi's however Marlin doesn't recommend Blazers in it's 1894 rifles. We went over this one back in 2009.

Hope this helps. Thanks, Tom

They don't work well in my Rossi .357 Magnum but have been 100 % reliable in
my Marlin 94P / .44 mag. I picked up a case of .44s for at a great price
several years ago feed and shoot just fine.

Before I found out about Marlin-vs-Blazer, i shot a box of them okay in my .44.

I've since used Magtech .44 FMJ and Winchester White Box softpoints without trouble.

Some guns can have feeding or extraction problems compared to brass ammo. The aluminum Blazer worked ok in my Rossi .45 Colt but there were noticeable differences in chambering.

Why don't the aluminum ones feed right? Is it the OAL or unique bullet profile of some sort only 'Blazer' uses, or the aluminum itself...?

One thing I do know about the CCI aluminum ammo is the aluminum is not as smooth as the brass cases and the rims are shaped a bit different. There is also no extractor groove as brass cases have.

I don't know how much that might have to do with the problems but I doubt it's the cartridge length. That would have to be within SAAMI specs, same as brass.

What I don't understand is why some rifles have trouble with these cases, and some don't.

I'll wait till I work over the gun to try them. (Steve's DVD on the way) I can use them in the blackhawk if they give me fits in the rossi. I have 2 boxes that I bought many moons ago. I'll stay clear of them in the future.

My understanding is that some of the problems with early Blazers was due to drag. Brass was a naturally 'lubricating' metal but aluminum created more friction.

yep, you beat me to it. Brass has a natural lubricity. Aluminum tend to gald. That said I've tried them in marlins and 92's. If the marlin is relatively smooth with brass it will probably work with the blazer. That's because the round feeds almost straight in. Same with the Win 94.
With a 92 the angle the ammo feeds in is more pronouced so it's more likely to jam on the blazer.
That said, most 357m 92's I've tried don't like 357m blazer but the 45lc guns seem to do ok with it.
