To anyone else she was just one of our dogs.

Post by Sheepman Dave »

I buried my best friend today.

She raised my two sons into young men, protected this family, farm & animals for the last 10 years.

As I get older, I prefer the company of animals to people.

Man's best friend indeed. Goodbye old friend, I'll see you on the other side.

Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who
possessed
Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity
And all the Virtues of man without his Vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if
inscribed over human ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the memory....of a Dog.

English poet Lord George Byron wrote this epitaph for his dog. I always thought it a fitting tribute to a good friend and companion.
I am sorry for your loss.

Sheep Man Dave - Offering my deepest sympathy, I feel honored you're sharing your loss with us.

I have a very strong attachment to the canine friends we have on our place. As an example, I have an 8 month old purebred Anatolian Shepherd pup who is going to be a great LGD and superior breeding male. We've had three offers to buy him at a higher price that we asked for his litter mates. For some reason, I just can't pull the trigger in letting him go from here. So, I guess we'll keep him along with his two remaining sisters and his mom. We'll just find a "job" for him here. So I can sympathize with your feelings for your lost friend. Grieve yes, but keep your eyes and heart open and you'll be surprised how his replacement will take eventually fill up the empty spot in your family's life.

I am very sorry for your loss. Many words have been posted here in the past when others of our brethren have lost their best friend, including the Rainbow Bridge and other touching sentiments. I do believe that we will see our furred friends again one day. I can't believe a loving God would keep us from those that loved us best, in the purest sense. As a number have said, it is never JUST a dog. I find the grief stays with me for years as I think of those companions I have lost. May your grief be fleeting and tempered by the wonderful memories of years spent with your friend.

We are the fortunate ones that know that these wonderful creations are "not just" anything. You said it best, "my best friend".

So very sorry for your loss.

Dave, My family and Scout, Sam, Pants, Bruce and Edward littlehead are sorry for your loss. I've lost three good friends over the years and it don't get any easier. Like you I'd rather be with my dogs than alot of folks I know. I miss the ones that are gone, but I enjoy the ones that are here. Good luck to you sir, and I hope you find another good friend. Frank

Didn't have a dog but for a couple of years as a kid, but seeing my middle two kids and their dogs makes me realize that as the original post said, they "raise your kids". Pretty awesome bond. We can learn from that.

So sorry for your loss. A good dog is one of the best things a man can have. I have three here in the room with me now and I know when it is their time to go I will shed more than a few tears. They are not just animals but members of the family.

Sorry to hear about this. I haven't lost a dog in quite some time. Hopefully won't for at least a few more years, but it happens. Funny how those little buggers just become family.

Very sorry for your loss. I know I've shed more tears for my canine companions than I ever shed for people I know....not that I don't value people, but my dogs always seemed to have more emotional ties.

Sorry for your loss. Have been there
too, and it is hard indeed. You know
God created many majestic and magnificent animals, you know, big
strong ect ect. But to me, (not to offend our cat lovers, bless em) no
doubt to me the dog is truly the best
he gave to man. Really, sometimes i have to think God has a dog too.

I was only 10 years old when my Dad woke me up early in the morning to tell me he had to put my first dog (Lady) down. He was upset and I was inconsolable.
I remember that morning and I remember my dog and I remember my Dad who passed away a few years ago and I feel sorry for your loss.
Sadly, your dog will let you down less often than a lot of people you meet.
Got a tear in my eye and nothing more to say.
