Poor picture of my just-acquired, first-year 336

Post by edwardyoung »

One of my brother's deputies is retiring to the Philippines (where his wife is from) next year. He can't take any guns, so he's selling them. He must really love his wife :-)

This was his father's deer rifle. It must have been his only one, because it has been carried a lot. He had to have fallen on it at least once. The buttstock was nearly split in two at the wrist and one of the tabs that fit into the rear of the receiver is broken off. All of the bluing is gone from the bottom of the receiver where he carried it. The rear sight was replaced with a Marbles semi-buckhorn. In other words, it's perfect. Plus, I'm a sucker for short magazine tubes. I'm sure this is the worst picture ever posted here, but it's the only picture I've taken of it so far. I didn't realize it was a first-year 336(E663x) until a couple days after I got it.

I fired the last ten rounds of Western SUPER X POWER-POINT ammo that came with it. It's not any more accurate than my micro-groove 336 Texan, but I think it gets more style points. Just sharing my joy. Any comments welcome.

Even though it's a Marlin 336, it looks different in several ways from those made today.
I'd do a bit of stock work to strengthen it and then go kill some more meat.

Glad you bought it.

I had to sell a Ruger Vaquero to get it, but I'm glad I bought it too.

 That is neat. No, it is NOT the worst photo ever posted on the forum.

That is a great old rifle.

Is the barrel shorter than 20 inch, or is it the short mag tube that makes it look that way?

Pop.

I measured to be sure, it is a 20" barrel.

I LIKE it, too !... :P :P .....AND, I'm glad for your acquisition, .......... But, ........ I don't think I'd EVER move ANYWHERE I couldn't have a gun.

Jes' sayin........................................

BTW, That's not a Model 336 Rifle (24" bbl), nor a Carbine (20" bbl, full-length mag) -
it's the more desireable (in some eyes) Model 336SC Sporting Carbine (20" bbl, 2/3 mag).

Thanks for all the replies. I couldn't imagine moving somewhere that I couldn't take my guns, either.

Edward,
That's a neat vintage Marlin 336SC (Sporting Carbine) you have there. Nice find! Thankfully, I have one also, made in 1949. It has a 4 groove barrel that runs .310" diameter in the groove. It shoots 170 gr, jacketed bullets the best and cast bullets of .311" diameter.

Enjoy!

The nice thing about a used gun like that is that you can feel free to customize it to your exact desires. Doing that to a 'vintage collectable' is bad Karma, and doing it to a brand-new not-so-much-as-scratched-or-dented model always seems 'chancy' if you did have to re-sell it someday.

I think older pieces like that have a character about them that a newer gun will never have.

Great acquisition, if you are interested I may have a stock for it. (Off a old .35 Rem, I will look when I get home)

Thanks again for all the replies. I wish it could talk, too. I didn't plan on doing any fixing-up, but I may take Paladin up on his stock offer, if it's not too much.

It's been the best Marlin couple weeks ever - I picked up a Marlin 39 Century Limited today for $325. The only other two I've run across were NIB and priced accordingly. The man I got it from said there's going to be another one coming out of pawn in the next couple of days. I don't know the name of the pawn shop, but I think it's Eden Pawn and Gun, 336-627-9894. He's not interested in shipping it, but maybe someone here is close enough to go get it. Ask for Barry.
