CMP Garand is here!
One month and one week from putting it in the mailbox to a happy delivery from Mr. FedEx.
Here's my Service Grade Springfield M1 Garand. It appears to my untrained eye to surpass the CMP's description. S/N dates it to 1955. Barrel is also a '55 Springfield. Muzzle gauges a 1 and throat erosion a 2. Should be a shooter! The guts are all HRA and look to be in top shape.

NICE! CMP has never disappointed me. My most recent purchase was a Winchester M1 Carbine, Service Grade, and I also think it beat their description. It has been a hoot to shoot.
CONGRATULATIONS on that piece of history that will still bring lots of enjoyment. I have been told to only use FMJ ammo in my Garand, and that is what I have done. I found some Match Grade .30-06 made for the Garand in the 1960's for a decent price at a gun show in en bloc clips and in bandoliers. I have been using those since I got my Garand with great results. It shoots better than I do, I would wager.

Good looking gun! The Garand is the first center fire rifle my oldest daughter ever shot thanks to the kindness of a stranger one day at a rifle range. She had been studying WW II in school and I was showing her the gun leaned in the rack when the owner offered to let her shoot it. I told her "There it is, the Garand. The gun that saved the world." I don't think it is an exaggeration to say Americans armed with Garands saved the world in WW II.
She still has the clip with the empties in it all these years later. She was not allowed to bring the clip to school for show and tell and asked me why. I told her it was because now people want to think we defeated the Nazis by condemning their actions in the strongest possible language or through sanctions. I told her don't forget what really happened.
Congrats on your fine rifle.

Re: CMP Garand is here!
Just curious, what is the minimum AGE for an individual applying for a CMP piece...? I can and will check the website if nobody knows offhand.
Would be a great 'summer project' for a kid to complete the application process...

Unless it has changed since I got mine, you need to be 18 at a minumum.
They will also want a copy of Birth certificate, and a copy of your current CMP Club membership.

Re: CMP Garand is here!
Ted, that's a beautiful rifle.
My CMP M1 was a Greek Army long-term loaner through NATO. Even after I cleaned up the stock, swelled it out and steel-wooled it a bit per articles by Glen Fryxell and others, it still shows where the soldier(s) tapped the points of their bullets within the clips on the the butt area to align them before loading; along with some other dings and scratches. But I love it and have decided not to exchange the stock because it has "character.

It looks like you have one in superb condition. Congratulations!

Re: CMP Garand is here!
John did you run your stock through the dishwasher like some folks do?
My stock is pretty clean and dry. The rest of the wood was just dripping with oil and old cosmo. I cleaned it up some last night and it lightened about 5 shades to where it matches the stock now. I think I'm going to try and steam out some of the dings then steel wool it and re-oil with some tung oil.
