30-30 loads

Post by two bit okie »

I have just got my bullets ready and inventoried the powder.

boolet weight 144 gr and 142 gr plainbase flat point

powders available 4895, 4350, 3031

cci large rifle

cases new unfired winchester.

Any suggestions before I go buy more powder. and if I have to get new, which powder is best for cast 144 and 142 gr bullets.

I used H4895 with cast bullets and results were just 'okay'. This was a reduced load, from the Hodgdon website. I also called Hodgdon and asked about IMR 3031, they said not to reduce the load to cast bullet levels. Didn't say why, though. So I decided not to buy a can, even though everybody raves about it at full power. I do use H4895 with full power loads and it's fine.

For cast bullets I got best results with IMR 4227. I also tried Trail Boss and wasn't impressed.

My bullets were Lasercast and so I was going for velocity up around 1500 with the 4227. If you want slower you might want to try a different (faster) powder.

Maybe different. I have used super slow powders, such as 4831, H-870 and 4350 with plain base cast bullet with good results. You want a powder which will fill the case and be slightly compressed when the bullet is seated. If the loading manuals or instruction booklets allow I use either a styrofoam wad, cut from either a coffee cup or flat meat package container as an over powder wad. The combination of slow powder and wad protects the base of the bullets, also can use a dab of bullet lube over the wad to reduce any chance of leading. Fitting the bullet to the bore is important. Normally I do this with a 200+ cast lead. It is a thumper load, but accurate in my 30-30's. No problem of set back when cycling the rounds through the action as well. Go slow and careful. 4350 is just a tad bit quicker I like the older H-4831 and H-870. Good luck be careful. ATB

Try AA 5744 it works well for cast and you can run it slow or max good powder for your pistols too. danny

UNIQUE. Somewhere between 7.0 and 10.0 you'll find a load your gun will like. 7.0 is the most accurate in my two 336's. At that charge weight, a pound of powder goes a long way.

Unique is a FANTASTIC low-mid range powder.
