Depends on the time frame and location. My first impression was influanced by you calling him a "mountain man". From that stand point, the rifle is wrong as is the spurs and boots and leggings. Also no knife.
It is a studio picture, the guy does look like he has been out awhile with the beard. My guess is a adventuress englishman that wanted to play the role for awhile and get a trophy photograph, probley much later than a mountain man would still be around, maybe 1895.

Well, for one, the one spur I can see is on upside down.

His Spurs on up-side down.

He is very much a Dude playing the role.

Looks like a studio prop job all the way around to me. The clothes aren't right, nor the gun. The guy may have long beard and hair, but doesnt look like he's been out much, he's too pale.

Thinking more about it, he looks more like a European of some sort, I'd almost say French (from the gun and long hair/pale skin), playing frontiersman for the camera.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

I caught the spur pretty quick. Definitely a studio shot.

That gender may not be right... then again, I've always been mystified by the "full beard" but NO left sideburn, along with what appears to be very different mustaches from left to right in this photo.

Why that just makes it easier for walkin' from dressin' area to the backdrop! :P

Makes me wonder how many of us here have a photo from our childhood of ourself duded up on a pony??? I do! Think I was around 5, and... I'll ave dig a copy of that up.

....fake beard and hair, and no mountain man stands like that with his hand on his hip. Trying a little too hard to be macho.

Boy, you guys would make good detectives!

The wrist on the hip looked a little effeminate to me.

I agree with adventurous Englishman.

1. The firearm looks to be a s/s double rifle with English style stock.
2. While he has a beard hair on his cheeks has been trimmed.
3. There is no left sideburn, again, hair trimming and shaving is inconsistent with straggly beard- missing sideburn is unusual as men in the Victorian era with beards seem to almost always have them.
4. His left ear seems to have an ear ring- unusual on an Englishmen unless he is in the Navy. Support for the idea of a woman in drag.
5. He is either european or has not spent much time out of doors- his features are not 'weathered' and there is something picked up by Griff and JKbrea- he is trying awfully hard to be macho and I find myself wondering if 'his' gender is 'female'.
6. Others have commented correctly on the boots and spurs
7. I suspect he is hunting with a guide etc- he does not seem to be wearing a knife and side arm- although there is something on his belt on his RHS I cannot make out as it is obscured by his body-maybe a knife.
