lead soft point Paco's way

Post by JNG »

A bit ago, I read from Paco about heating up the tip of a lead bullet while in water to make the tip softer. Do I remember correctly? Have any of you tried it? Seems it would be great with a 357 158 grain semi-wadcutter against critters.

yes,it does soften them.i tried it on some .32 cal.bullets that were commercially cast.i tested them by putting them nose to nose in a vise.the annealed one flattened easily while the non-annealed held firm.never did test them in the field.it does take practice to anneal properly(slight color change)and too much heat will make them slump.
