Brass Trimming

Post by Highplains »

I've inherited with my new (to me) 336CB 38-55 a bunch of lightly used Winchester brass. I understand that the Starline is a better way to go but I'll have to use the the Win for now. After a short trip to the range, I was able to shoot enough to determine that this gun WAY outshines the Win Legacy 38-55 I got rid of several years ago. It's bore is .380" and while I'd like to shoot a .380" or .381" hardcast it will not chamber them. Nonetheless, it seems happy with the .379" bullets I have. Regarding the brass: Most of it, once sized, is pretty long-up to 2.085" and over. I'm unsure if the previous owner trimmed his brass or not. Should I not trim these back to the SAAMI length of 2.075?

I believe that max length is 2.125", the SAAMI length you refer to is the "trim to" length which is 2.124" so if using the "short" brass which is supposedly 2.085" you are good to go. What is critical is that it all be the SAME length so pick a length and trim it to that length.

Thanks Hobie. The shortest ones are 2.080" so I'll trim them to that length.
