OT: A lot of Bull!

Post by 86er »

I spent the weekend bull riding in local events. It was pretty eye opening when the cowboys were as young as 9 years old, a 13 year old and more than 75% under 21 years old. One guy was 30 and one other guy and myself were the only guys older than him - and we got him by a decade. That should have told me something. Anyway, after hitting the ground about a dozen and a half times I did make two rides. I also had two bad wreck and I figured they'd be more entertaining to talk about than the regular "fell off" rides or "bucked off" rides. The first wreck was on Brindle Biscuit. Weighing in around 1800 pound he was pretty mild for his size. We got along great until I hit the ground in the well on his right side. He promptly spun and planted his front hoof on my head, followed by his back hoof. The impact broke my helmet off my head and messed up the mask. I got up and ran only to find out I was bleeding pretty good. A quick trip to the hospital got me an MRI, 7 stiches in the chin, and some collagen/glue shots in my face. That was followed by a tentanus shot. A few hours later I was back up and running. After a few more trips to the chute I met with a little bull named Shiny,Black and Tiny. Things were looking good until he turned back to the right and I over-corrected. I got slammed into the gate on the way down and the little bugger shoved me half way under the gate with his horn and stomped me too. Slightly disoriented, I had a hard time figuring out how to get up - thank goodness for the bull fighters that saved me on that one. That cost me some pulled this and that and a few sprains and strains but not enough to keep me from going back for more. I finally admitted at this stage in life it is much harder to get up and recover than it was 10 years ago. I had a great time though! Here are the wrecks:

Too cool. Haven't ridden a bull since I was like 14. I don't bounce like I used to and it takes a whole lot more time to heal.

i retired from rough stock at 23 when my hip was broken, went to team roping lost my right thumb but they sewed it back s on it's a little crooked but it works wouldn't trade all that for anything and would probably do it all again if i were young enough. i still rope when i get the chance but most of my time is spent building custom saddles and gun leather now.

Well, Willy, why don't you start a thread and show us some of your leather work. We've got a number of people here that do that work, professionally and personal. I for one would like to see your work.

What the hell were you thinking? I was yound and dumb (read drunk) enough once to ride a "wild cow" at a local small town celebration. Good grief, bulls?
I would rather tell my wife she is a big fat cow than jump on a bull's back.

You were lucky.

Just wait, it gets better.

Another 10 years and you'll be looking back saying how great is was back then. How you healed so much faster when you were 40-ish, and all that.

At some point, it hurts to get out of bed, even when you feel "good".

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

Well that is a bit inspiring for this soon to be 42 year old. A good reminder that I need to get off my duff and start living out of the comfort zone. Glad you made and had a good time Joe.

Joe, now you see why the Rodeo Clowns are the best friends you can have. Now that you have proven you are hardheaded, I would like for you to stay healthy enough for next May's hunt in Africa. I am losing weight and getting into shape for it and would hate for you to miss out on the fun when I get to sneak up for a 75 yard shot on a Zebra. (I am getting a little ambitious on that, aren't I.)

Joe, I spent quite a few years of my youth riding bulls. Most of it was not to far from your neck of the woods (Bob Blackwoods Arena there in Farmersville) YOUR RIGHT, ITS A YOUNG MANS GAME! I rode through high school up until about the age of 23. After it became apparent to me that I wasnt going to give Tuff Hedeman or Ty Murry much competion I came to my senses before I ever got busted up too bad. IMO, It 's something every YOUNG GUY should do at least a couple times in his life!
