Ammo question...
If the .358 Win is a blown out .308, then what is the .30-06 when blown out to .35?

Re: Ammo question...
It becomes a .35-'06 --- usually called the .35 Whelen.

Re: Ammo question...
I always thought the 35 Whelen was simply a blown-out 30-06 - same shoulder.
Yep, just checked - same shoulder angle of 17.5 degrees.

Hi All,
Rocky Gibbs blew all his -06 cartridges out to the max!! He'd really have fun with the powders we have today.

Re: Ammo question...
I've always been intrigued by the 30 Gibbs. I have some old articles by Rocky that give some very impressive ballistics. Not sure what he used for measuring pressure, but I'm sure it had to be way up there! Very interesting reading anyhow.

Re: Ammo question...
Neither the .358 Winchester nor the .35 Whelen is "Blown out"! Both cartridges are simply necked up, the case body and shoulder remain identical to the parent cartridge.
The Gibbs, and Ackley, series of cartridges are something completely different.

Good morning
Loooks like it would depend on what the origonal post meant by "Blown Out".
Fireforming I guess could be looked at as the neck being blown out.
I have at times been guilty of using common words for technical applications. Does add a bit of muck to the mix.

Re: Ammo question...
The .35 Whelen is no more nor less than the .30-'06 necked up to .35 caliber, WITH NO OTHER CHANGES...
The Gibbs line of wildcats were necked up or down from their parent case, and all had the shoulder blown forward, and the case body straightened as much as possible, to increase powder capacity.
There are other .35-caliber versions, such as the Ackley, Brown, &c, which differ from the original .35 Whelen in final configuration.
