MOVIES - AVATAR

Post by J Miller »

Wifie made a run to WalMart at about 11:45 last night to buy the move AVATAR.

Setting aside all the political and mother earth religious ideas I have only one word to describe this movie:

INCREDIBLE!

For those who missed it at the big screen like we did, go buy it.

If you ever get the chance to see it at the cinema in 3D, go and see it. The film was awesome, but in 3D it's mind blowing.

Caught it at an IMAX in 3D and it was awesome. Wife brought the movie home yesterday and we watched it last night. It's unreal what they can do with computer generation anymore.

After seeing it in IMAX 3D viewing it on TV must be a letdown. I probably won't bother.

Mike, actually watching it in 3D on an IMAX is almost too stimulating. To much going on to really be able to take it all in. It's almost stimulus overload. It would be more than worth it to watch it on TV.

When my wife got there the WalMart sales guy had just brought out more copies. Their displays had been stripped. Besides my wife waiting there was a Sheriff deputy waiting.
In conversation he told her that in a month or so they'll going to bring it back to the big screen with something like 15 more minutes of movie that was cut the first time. Then in October they're going to bring it out the second version on DVD. So we may end up with two copies. No big deal. We got the dual disk package with both DVD and Blu-Ray discs. So I can watch it on my computer too.

The hot tall blue chick was voiced by Zoe Saldana, the gal that plays Uhura on the new Star Trek.

You're correct, Kim, it was fun watching everyone in the theater slap at the "bugs" and floating objects, my wife included. Maybe I will get a copy. Who knows, it might be good on wide screen HDTV. :)

You can Blaine, my daughter has a couple Disney movies that are 3D. The picture looks all fuzzy without the glasses. I hope Avatar is available in 3D. Here lately though, I've been seeing commercials for a new 3D tv that's coming out. Not sure what that's all about.

I said the same thing, then my wife hit me upside the head from across the room...and it is a large room

Actually it was a pretty good movie, it reminded me of "Dancing with Wolves" for some reason.

Okay Joe, you convinced me. I was not going to buy it, despite the fact that I love science fiction. I just do like being preached to, and Cameron has made such idiotic staements lately that I was really put off. I know the kids want to see it.

Ysabel,

I totally agree with you about the preaching part. Either I'm a dunce or that preaching part was hype put on by ultra emotional types. I didn't see it. It reminded me of any number of movies where the peaceful indigenous people were violated by the rich and greedy. It's an old story, so if it's preachy we've seen it all before. But then again I don't watch a movie looking for hidden messages or agendas. I watch for entertainment.

I enjoyed it for what it was, a really well done ( excellent ) animated science fiction movie. I just may watch it again today since I'm home sick.

.......................................
Oh by the way for everybody who has not seen it there is two things that really caught my attention.
First the animation. EVERYTHING in this movie is animated, even the humans. I have never seen such realistically animated humans. Right down to the pores in the skin, the wrinkles on the knuckles, and the expressions. You will get to a point you'll swear it's a combination of live action and animation. It's not. Michelle Rodriguez is one of the actors and they animated her so well you will think it's actually her. They caught her nuances and personality perfectly. Did the same thing for Sigourney Weaver. Very impressive, to me anyway.

Second the size differences between the humans and blue people. They filmed this in such a way that when you are in the human settlement that looks normal. When you are in the blue peoples settlements that looks normal.
But when they interact the difference in size is shocking.

Yeah, I should have pushed harder to see this on the big screen.

LOL. :D That's actually pretty much it. Or maybe "Star Wars meets Dances With Wolves".

At any rate, it looks real good in HD and is just flat out a great sci-fi movie.

I seem to recall in recent history a nation where the government emptied the cities and the people where returned to the countryside to lived in a perfect society. A society based on economic and social equality without the horrible pollution of urban areas. What was the nation? Oh, I remember Cambodia, the socialist ideal. Give me a break John Cameroon you and you athiestic ilk are just power hungry creatures 10 times worse than any boogie man in your lame productions. Besides 3 hours for a flick not only does it pain my mind but, my posterior just cannot bare sittin through it. Sorry for the rant.

Watched it last night on DVD, it was quite good. I caught 3 comments coming from the anti-war bunch, those being "fight terror with terror", "shock and awe", and I thought I heard them mention daisy-cutter or bunker buster when talking about the big bomb.

All that political stuff aside, it was a good movie. I'm kinda glad I didn't see it in 3-D. I can't stand heights and the scenes flying around on the lizards and climbing the vines in the floating mountains was almost more than I could take in 2D. I'm afraid 3-D might have made me reach for the Dramamine.

I really enjoyed seeing Stephen Lang play the bad colonel. I've been a fan of his way back when he was in Crime Story in the 80's.

I also thought it was cool that that gigantic robot suit that they wear to get around in had a scaled to fit bowie knife attachment, that was neat looking.

The CGI was great and really made that tree look like it was a couple thousand feet tall. I've never seen human animation done this well. Nothing looked phony or unreal. Most all other movies you can tell when they've used animation especially when humans do super-human things. Not so in this movie. I really believe it's a new page in movie-making. Kinda like Star Wars was back in the 70's

Overall, a good movie. If you haven't seen it yet, it's worth a watch.

If you missed it in 3d you're in luck, they are re-running it later this summer, with additional footage. The 3d stuff WAS unreal.... like someone said, people swatting at the bugs, pushing leaves/brush aside/"out of your face!" it was funny but cool, you'd catch yourself doing it, and then hope no one saw! LOL!! Burning ashes from the fire you'd "duck".... cool experience. Yeah, the "preaching" was there, but nothing outrageous, dances with wolves, the American Indian story... call it what you will, but it was "truthful"... it DID happen here, numerous times! So what the heck...... just enjoy the film!

I had not read this thread before today as I had not watched the movie.

Bought it yesterday, watched it today: Great entertainment. If you want to be offended by it, so be it. Hmmm, seems to parallel the Amercian experience with Native Americans, no? Nice to see a different outcome, glad it happened there, not here, tho'.

I think I've changed my mind, I'll go see it in 3-D if it comes back out. How often does a movie come around that is made specifically for 3-D. I wish now I'd seen it when it was in theaters the first time.

Just saw it at home. Awesome movie. A real game changer in the graphics department. Some folks have commented on the movie message and I think it may have been missed by some or perhaps misinterpreted. I believe that the primary message could be distilled down to "greed is evil". Most religions you can think of says as much and that is what this move said as well. The Na'vi hunted, so it wasn't anti-hunting. They killed in defense, so it wasn't that either. So blind greed is destructive and arrogance is a critical weakness. I think most can agree on that.
Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Which side you would have found yourself on if you were in the movie would probably say a lot.

Re: MOVIES - AVATAR

Post by firefuzz »

I finally saw it last night and have to say I enjoyed the movie, which is rare as I don't watch Sigourney Weaver much anymore. The politics were there as stated, but I didn't find them offensive as I don't believe that everything should be sacrificed in the name of money. I will go watch it at the theater if it comes back out in 3D.

May your rifle always shoot straight, your mag never run dry, you always have one more round than you have adversaries, and your good mate always be there to watch your back.
