AMAZING SHOOTING!!! Braggin' on my buddy's boy...

Post by Stump Buster »

Today the Rod and Gun Club had a "Shoot What Ya Brung" shoot and I'm proud to report there were MANY leverguns in attendance!!! One levergun and shooter stood out amongst the crowd!!!

The shoot usually begins with busting poker chips that have two holes drilled into them. Twine/string is tied onto each hole and one end is tied to a nail on a cross beam approximately 6' off the ground. The other end of the string is tied to a mystery prize in a small cloth bag suspended slightly off the ground. The object is to bust the poker chip, allowing the bag to fall to the ground. The "Super Shooter" then walks downrange and collects his/her prize. The range is unknown and not posted.

My Buddy Steve has a son named Trevor, who's has been shooting with us for some time now and has turned into one heck of a shot!!!

Well, Steve has this old Winchester 94 that he bought for almost nothin' a few years back for chasing after bears. Trevor has lusted over the rifle since the day Dad brought it home. Today Steve made a HUGE mistake!!! Steve told Trevor if he could break a poker chip with the old .30-30, he could claim the rifle as his own. The VERY FIRST SHOT out of the .30-30 blew a poker chip to kingdom come. The crowd roared as Trevor walked downrange to pick up the mystery prize!!! That was nothing compared to the look on Steve's face when he had to turn the rifle over to it's new RIGHTFUL owner!!!

That short story would have been a good tale in and of itself....however... this is only the beginning.

Trevor then wins the "Turkey Shoot" with one shot by breaking a "STRING" holding up a suspended bottle of fine wine!!!

But that's not the end of it....Read on my fellow Levergun nuts...

We decided to do something a little different at this shoot. We had been talking about Bob Munden and trick shots. SO we placed 5 playing cards on edge and shortened the distance to about 11-13 yards. Trevor shot one of the cards and launched it into the air with an almost complete cut through the top of the card. The other cards were hit by other club members in attendance (Thanks for letting us play too Trevor), so we decided to suspend a couple playing cards on a string and let them spin in the wind. The first card was hit pretty easy as it was broadside when the shooter fired....BUT Trevor actually SPLIT his card in two...YES, let me say that again TREVOR ACTUALLY SPLIT HIS CARD IN TWO (A PERFECT CROSS CARD SHOT WITH A .30 caliber section missing from the middle of a card that was suspended on a string  ). THAT folks, is a once in a lifetime shot and it was witnessed by at least 12 people!!! Steve is having the cards mounted in a frame (and will probably hang it UNDER Trevor's NEW old rifle). So a poker chip, thin rope and two playing cards later, I gave Trevor a bad time about how he probably used up all his best shots in one day and will probably be a sorry excuse for a shooter from here on out.....but somehow I doubt it.

UNFORTUNATELY I forgot my camera today, but here's Trevor shooting the Winchester at the SWYB Shoot on January 1st of this year (That's his PROUD Daddy in the far back watching as a poker chip is probably disappearing).

Here's what the string for the "Turkey Shoot" prize looks like after a couple shooters get close to cutting it in half...

Oh and the load....inexpensive 150gr. Federal Power-Shok!!!

Here's how the math added up today...

Old ratty rifle(Now Priceless) + cheap OTC ammo + Excellent Young Shooter = ONE PERFECT MATCH!!! :D

Thanks for reading and sharing Trevor's 5 Minutes of Fame!!!!!

Hey Andy,

You need to come on over with a couple of your levers!!! I know we keep saying we're gonna do some shootin', but we need to make it happen!!! Bring a .50cal lever if ya got one!!! I'll let ya know when the next SWYB shoot is and you can shoot as my guest!!!

Take Care,

Mike

I have been remiss in my duties to you Mike, and should have called you as well. I am thunking myself on the head for my stupidity. I would love to attend as your guest.

Now, my question is, can you use a 12 gauge slug for "twine busting?" I need an edge against that kid......

Those kinds of shooting GAMES are what we need more of; they make it a heck of a lot more FUN at the range; not everyone is an obsessive-load-developer or whatever like some of us are   .
