Armi Sport Versus Rossi

Post by Bodkin »

Good morning all.

First post on this forum and I'd like some advice. I'm looking for a Blue steel 92 action rifle. .44 Magnum with a twenty inch round barrel. For some reason it's salmost impossible to get a Rossi in these specifications in this country. Stainless steel and 24 inch octagonal barrel only. A dealer has suggested Armi Sport. Significantly more costly, but the quality is supposed to be high.

Has anyone any experience of Armi Sport?

All advice gratefully recieved.

Merry Christmas to all.

Welcome aboard!

I have a Rossi 92, and an Armi Sport Spencer reproduction. Both are well done. I'm not sure I'd spend more on an Armi Sport though if I could get the Rossi in the configuration I wanted to get it. My recommendation - get the Rossi, send it off to Nate Kiowa Jones (Steve Young) and have it slicked up and the awful safety removed, and you'll end up with a fantastic gun and probably still have spent less than you would have on the Armi Sport!

Good luck - let us know what you end up doing! :D

Regarding the Rossi, you didn't say what country, but here in the US they're virtually everywhere. They're listed variously as Rossi, Rossi Puma, LSI Puma, Legacy Puma, Interarms (older ones), EMF, EMF Hartford,...all of the above combined with 92 or 1892 depending on manufacturer. LSI (Legacy) no longer distributes their Rossi "Pumas," but has been peddling the Armi Sports/Chiappa models for several months--still as "Pumas"--though most you still see advertised with that moniker are leftover LSI Rossis. Since LSI "left" the Rossi group, Taurus has been marketing (in large numbers at the big stores and internet) "Rossi 92s" again on their own. Look in places like Gunbroker or Gunsamerica for any of the above. Philip (Joel) Rezak on GA will be happy to fix you up with an EMF--great guy. But there are plenty others listed on these sites as well. Check out a related thread running now on this site.

Ditto, get with Steve Young (aka Nate Kiowa Jones) for more clarification and fixin' up. He will have a few things to say about the Italians that might need attention, though otherwise very nice guns--he found a few things early-on he didn't care for, and he developed a few (Rossi parts exchange!) Fixes for--at least for himself. I didn't sense they were necessarily deal killers or just bugged him, and I don't know if AS/Chiappa has rectified to his satisfaction. He has stated that they're having him review their new 1886, so maybe will listen to him on the 92 as well. I love the Italians' period correct ladder sights most original carbines came with, their attention to detail on little things like finishing their fore-ends, and the nice, the genuine walnut furniture...guess at least part what you pay the premium for.

I don't know what country you're referring to, when you say blued 20" carbon steel carbines aren't available - because they're certainly on Rossi's website as available (below).

I can only tell you my personal experience. I tried a Rossi .454 and it showed up with rust and some damaged wood so I sent it back. I then tried a .44 Mag stainless Rossi and it had a scratched bolt face and was bulging the cases unacceptably. So I threw in the towel and had the distributor send me an Armi Chiappa made Charles Daly 92 in .45 Colt and just paid the extra in cost. Frankly, the Italian 1892 is in a completely different league and is well worth the cost difference.

Please don't misinterpret this as a slam on the Brazilian rifles as I know that there are many satisfied users out there, but they're just not finished to the same high degree in my view. I'm very pleased with the Charles Daly 92 and it's nice to have a real looker as well as a shooter. The wood, case coloring, metal fit/finish, details and overall build are simply lovely...as they should be for the price.

Best,
Oly
