338 MX bullet test

Post by BenT »

The bullets I'm testing are the Hornady 200gr FP and the 200gr FTX.

I've settled on a Varget load with the velocity average at 2307 fps. I will do some more load tests but I was shooting for between 2300 and 2400 fps.

This the Jugganator 2.0 ( don't ask about 1.0). I used scrap wood from house projects and from a snowmoble trailer I scapped out. It holds 13 jugs plus removable piece of 1/2 inch plywood that I shoot through to simulate rib /bone.

This is what it looked like after a test. The pieces holding my plywood in got busted up. I'll have to work on a fix for that with the Jugganator 2.1

Here is the end result at 100 yards. On the left is the FTX and the right the FP. The flat point was found the 7th jug with a picture perfect mushroom with 7 petals. The FTX exited the 5th jug and was found in the box next to the 7th jug. It had 4 petals but left some lead and copper in the first jug it impacted. After impact the FTX weighted 156.7gr and the FP weighted 187.9 gr. Any deer shot with them in the boiler room wouldn't go far. But I'm swayed a little more by the less fragmentation of the FP. I don't shoot more tham 150 yards with most being less than 75yards. But both performed well at this velocity.

Great testing, those 338's ought to put a real whacking on deer. I feel your pain about the jug holder, I'm on about 3.0. I think my next one will be made to use with 1 gallon freezer bags filled with water.
