Sporting related clothing - On Topic-kinda
OK, here is something I've been thinking on to help Mrs J Miller and I get outta IL.
Question: What articles of clothing, or sporting goods, normally made by a seamstress that used to be made in the U.S.A. but now isn't, do you wish you could find, and what would you be willing to pay for it? Long drawn out question I know, but wifie is a seamstress and has the ability to make clothes.
Please be specific and post pics if you can.
Thanks for your ideas.
Joe

What we in the west call a duster, Sheplers has them but they cost 3 prices.
Some of you westerners chime in and help me describe it.

Anything you can make that goes with the concealed carry license will sell well, such as jackets with holsters inside or pockets inside for the handgun, as well as pants with the same idea. Some are on the market but not enough to have any real variety.

Don't laugh but my mother excels at working with a sewing machine and serger. I have a couple of outfits made of US of A made Polar Fleece for hunting. Basically sweatpant and pull over shirt type clothing that works well and I can brag that it isn't from China.

Couple of fairly simple (I think) items I'd like to see made in the USA.
Blaze orange covers for western hats for hunting season.
Western shirts that DON"T look like they were designed by Elton John. flap pockets with buttons instead of those cheesy little snaps they are slapping on them in the factories in China. CHINA 'fer Pete's sake!

Joe,
The Dixie Gun Works catalog has lots of patterns for reenactment period correct clothes for both men and women. I don't know what the demand is like over there but in the UK there is a small market for it.

+1 on MADE TO ORDER Period/reenactment type stuff.
My sister does that for Rennesance Faires. SHe's out at Pennsic right now selling 14th century UNDERWEAR... (go figure).
Talk to the CAS guys.
If I were playing that game, I'd be looking for 19th C. EUROPEAN clothing as might be worn by an ExPat. Bloody hard to find I'm sure.
As for modern stuff... Anything found in a 1940s LL Bean would be a good start. Real Flannel Shirts, both Wool & Cotton, would be my #1.

Great Idea!
My toughts if interested.
Make up some outfits from your/ our favorite Westerns. They'd sure sell for
SASS and Halloween etc.
I always laked that shirt the kid in "Outlaw Josey Wales" wore.
Just a thought.

Re: Sporting related clothing - On Topic-kinda
Kinda on the Western shirt thing.....How about a CAS wear? More specifically, bib shirts or cavalry shirts. I always liked the ones you would see John Wayne wearing (you know the ones, they have 2 rows of buttons up the front but he always had one side undone) but the ones I see today, while maybe more period correct, are ugly with girly little bibs on the front.
Other than that "custom" CAS wear and period clothing in general may be a good line to get into.

Re: Sporting related clothing - On Topic-kinda
I've been looking for shirts like that Cabelas one made of a soft open weave hemp with a front button seam that does not wrinkle like heck when you wash it.
I can't tell you how many nice shirts I don't wear or keep because the front part looks like stuff after laundry. I can, but don't like to iron.
On another note, with the economy the way it is, many business women are having their nice suits and skirts refitted rather than buying new ones. The lady down the street is plum covered up with fittings.

1" ratcheting tie-downs.
Cut the hooks off and sew the long strap to the ratchet. I use these for lumber and ladders on my truck rack. Just loop over the load and thread through the ratchet spindle and tighten. It's hard to do that with those durn hooks on em. Never seen them in a store. Market them to a lumber yard.
Not the wide ones, they're too bulky. Ones like these:

Re: Sporting related clothing - On Topic-kinda
The first thing that came to mind was a vest. To my mind all the ones out there are either too skimpy a material or too heavy a material, funky colors, and/or without proper pockets with proper pocket material (heavy duty) without proper reinforcement stitching and/or with tails that are too short or again a bit funky in appearance. I would wear a good vest at work (either place) or around town.

Great idea!! Would be easy to make too I would think. The one I have makes me look like I'm on Safari.

I'd like to see a vest that doesn't leave a large gap between the bottom of the vest and your pants. One made for big guys, and in the USA.

OK, Now you got my interest.... I already make purses from recycled jeans. It will take a bit of thinking, but I do believe I could make something on that line.Travis Morgan wrote:Concealed carry purses are muy expensive.jnyork wrote:Anything you can make that goes with the concealed carry license will sell well, such as jackets with holsters inside or pockets inside for the handgun, as well as pants with the same idea. The vests can be done but I would have to have measurements.
I have to warn all of you, fabric can be extremely expensive. I was online with one of my haunts looking at Hemp fabric. It averages $23 a yard and it takes at least three yards to make a mans shirt.
As for other types of fabric, I will have to do some more leg work on my day off.

Now you know why I'm still looking for a shirt. Hemp is durable and breathable, but here in the USofA it's durn 'spensive!

Mrs. Miller,
I see tons of stuff I would like to buy, but when I look for my size , no dice ( small ) I believe this is an underserved market, one of the big guys chimed in on an earlier post, I think the same thing is true for the big guys, those may be two niche markets. I know I would be willing to pay for things made that I can not obtain though " normal " channels.

Just my .02. Hard to find a good blaze orange hunting vest. One for bird hunting with shell loops for smaller than 12 ga. ie 20 ga. The ones I have found are 12 ga and shells fall out of the shell loops/pockets when you bend over. Even if you use 12ga they don't hold the shell well.
